Kane’s stories take place in a brutal world steeped in ancient history, with bloody conflicts and dark secrets. Wagner added gothic horror elements to them, taking the hero into fantastic sagas spanning war, romance, triumph and tragedy. The character, also known as Mystic Swordsman, first made his debut in 1970’s Spiderweb Woven from Darkness , then appeared in twenty short stories and three novels. Kane’s series has attracted a lot of fans over the years.
In an interview, Wagner stated that Kane grew out of his childhood fascination with villains, and the author himself stated that:
Kane is not your typical magic and sword character; is a gothic hero / villain straight from gothic novels from the 18th and early 19th centuries. I wanted to create a mysterious amoral character, much more intelligent and physically much stronger than his opponents. Before Kane, villains were either twisted geniuses or clumsy fools. Kane is a character who can intellectually master any situation or tear his head off if there was no other option. The Hero is closer to the Terminator than to Conan, although neither of these comparisons are true. I suppose the best description is that Kane is a genetically engineered, organic cyborg created with magic and alien science.
At the moment, it is not known whether we will see Kane in a TV series or in a feature film. It is also not clear which of his adventures will be transferred to the screen. However, it was confirmed that the project will be supervised by Keith Previte and Kevin Elam, the heirs of the author of the novel.
