The Outsider canceled by HBO after its first season

Although the adaptation of Stephen King’s novel was well received by viewers, the station decided to cancel the series. What caused this decision?

The Outsider is an HBO series based on a novel by the famous author – Stephen King. The plot of the production focuses on the character of an insightful detective who takes part in an extremely mysterious investigation. He tries to explain the circumstances of the brutal murder committed on a young boy. Has he managed to solve the mystery? We will not find out for now.

HBO has published a short statement thanking the creators for their cooperation and good luck in continuing the stories from the world created by King. However, it does not explain the reasons that decided to stop broadcasting the series. This is quite an unusual situation, considering that The Outsider could not complain about the lack of audience . The finale of the first season was watched by 2.2 million viewers in total, summarizing the results from every available source, and the finale was watched live by 1.37 million people. The average viewership of a single episode was around 9 million viewers. This is a very good result, especially when compared with the station’s last hit – Watchmenwith 7 million viewers over the same period. It is even more puzzling why HBO decided to terminate the cooperation with the creators of the series and will no longer broadcast the series either on TV or on the HBO Go platform. Of course, financial issues are among the potential reasons. Perhaps it turned out that the continuation of the series would be financially unprofitable for the station or that it would require more funds than HBO could offer. However, we still have to wait for the official explanation.

However, this does not necessarily mean the end of production. The creators of the series will try to find a station that will agree to broadcast their material. Outsider will have a pause, but fans can still hope to continue the adaptation of King’s novel as soon as they find a new home. For now, however, these are only the hopes of the creators, the implementation of which will certainly take some more time.
