In 2018, they announced their plans to take up the John Carpenter franchise. Blumhouse intend to form lines with creator David Gordon Green and create a sequel to their 1973 masterpiece a decade later. Of course, Jason Blum has something to say:
I hope to do the same with the Exorcist as with Halloween . The first version of Halloween was great, the second was fine, but the rest came out poorly. And then we showed up with a new perspective, and people liked it, so I hope that we will also succeed with the Exorcist . Everyone assumes we’ll trip over and fall on our faces, but all the time I’m saying we have the same director, writer (David Gordon Green, Danny McBride), so I think we’ll rewrite the title and show a fresh, new, different perspective, but combined with the original version, but it will also be very, very scary.
Blum and Green plan not to stop at just one title, but to tackle the entire trilogy. Morgan Creek Entertainment has announced that it wants to join. David Gordon Green commented on the script during an interview with Total Film:
For this part, you had to do some very good research, and not go with the flow while writing. In this type of work, you talk to a lot of people, read a lot of books and do interviews. What the first film showed was authentic and dramatic, you cannot just connect to it and I would be naive if I thought so. It was a lot of fun for me to participate in this project as it led to many conversations that allowed me to find myself.
The new version of The Exorcist will be released on October 13, 2023.
