What had to happen happened – “CD-Action” became a quarterly, changing its formula. Longer waiting for the next numbers increases the appetite, and this one is rewarded with much more content, which can be found on over one hundred and sixty pages! However, not only this is noticeable after taking the magazine in your hands, because the cover has also changed a lot. Of course, we will still notice the meticulously matched graphics and the relatively recently refreshed name on its front, but we will not see anything else here. There are no longer any short descriptions advertising the most attractive content, only tasteful minimalism remains. Whether it is a change for the better or for worse, I leave it to your assessment. At least the back looks almost the same as before.
In the beginning, there were a lot of words
How much larger volume influenced the content of the quarterly can be seen at the very beginning. So far, a small editorial has grown to the entire page, a new format has appeared in which we get to know the editors, and comments regarding the current state of the gaming world are much richer. In the case of the latter, we can learn a bit about the trend of smaller game development studios by the industry giants, and there was also a description of the gamedev’s reaction to the inhuman, cruel and unreasonably justified war in Ukraine. Attention! The support that comes from the right attitude, shown in the article, can provoke an influx of tears of emotion.
The latest issue of the popular magazine could not miss game reviews, although there are not too many of them this time. In the case of the quarterly, it is absolutely justified, because who would like to read production descriptions with a three-month delay? Nevertheless, we can break through the ten pages (!) Of the Elden Ring rating , i.e. the successful debut of From Software soulslike in the open world, find out how beautiful Horizon Forbidden West is , how much fun DyingLight 2 is and how much more you can squeeze from GTA 5 .
Journalism with a bang
While the new publishing cycle is not conducive to placing content that quickly becomes gray-bearded, it definitely allows for the presentation of extensive journalism. What we will not find here! The history of Nintendo consoles on the occasion of the five years of the successful Switch, extensive text about dungeons in games and reality, memories of the once incredibly awaited Nokia N-Gage, presentation of a lead-fiber Zośka, a very long (twelve pages!) Article about the real and presented in various media Polish hussars and a fairly detailed discussion of how much work it costs to create a few minutes long movie trailer for the game is definitely content that cannot be ignored!
Has the change of a monthly into a quarterly been “CD-Action” for good? Of course, how many readers, so many sentences – one will miss a lot of content about the latest productions, others will appreciate more emphasis on more creative texts, but I have to stick to one noticeable trend in the latest issue. Both the reviews and some articles contain links to the website, where there are ratings from other editors and additional or supplementary content that did not fit in the paper version. While in the case of descriptions of new games it does not offend so much, in my opinion it is quite a dangerous direction with wider publications. Yes, there is usually so much information on a subject that forcing them to be forced into a uniform text would destroy its intricate structure, but in “CD-Action” we could and can still see additional curiosities in small frames neatly placed in the article. Won’t constant juggling between two different media scare fans away from using one of them? But maybe the magazine and the website should be limited to their content without mixing too much? Or maybe it was ArcziN who was telling and scolding? Judge for yourself.
