The Minions, which have become icons of mischief and malice in recent years, starting with 2010’s Despicable Me, are now making a comeback in their fifth full-length movie that has delighted audiences around the world. Minions: Gru’s Entry is an even more thrilling story than all of the previous installments put together! It is also an opportunity to introduce a new hero. Otto, who powers the group of Minions (Kevin, Stuart and Bob) as a character completely different from the others.
Otto is different from the other Minions. Even though he is as clumsy and well-meaning as the others, and even though others also make mistakes, he is the best at making mistakes, says film director Kyle Balda. – Otto is an Outsider at the very beginning. He talks too much and is a bit different from the others, which prevents Kevin, Stuart and Bob from including him in the group right away. But in the end we come to the conclusion that these are the things that make him unique: he represents all of us who have ever felt like we weren’t part of a group of cool kids.

Gru’s entry on many levels takes the Minions to a whole new ground, but also to new times: the 1970s. This decade has become a real diamond mine for the creators when it comes to music, fashion and pop culture discoveries.
I was about the same age as Gru in our movie when I grew up in the ’70s so it’s very personal to me, says Balda. – TV, music, cars, hairstyles, bell pants – there was just a lot of chic in everything. And thanks to the vibrant colors and disco aesthetics, this was surely a decade in which the visuals played a key role.
One aspect of pop culture in the 70s in particular gave the opportunity to transfer the Entry of Dec campaign ‘s Entry action to a level never before seen in any other Illumination film.
The kung fu movies from the 1970s were an important reference and inspiration, ‘Balda continues. – We watched a lot of movies that I liked as a child. The first that comes to mind is “36. Shaolin Chamber ”because we used a lot of similar items to what we saw in this movie, but the greatest source of inspiration was the comedy kung fu movies. Some of the sequences we have created are a tribute to this genre and the great work that has been done in such famous productions as “The Drunken Master” with Jackie Chan, “Kung Fu Frenzy” and “Shaolin soccer”.
Above all, the new Minions movie is another crazy production with the power of friendship. When, at the beginning of the movie, Gru’s dream is to become a member of an excellent team of villains and they reject him, he takes revenge on them and becomes their worst enemy. Gru is hungry for all the great things every villain dreams of, but what he really missed and what he unexpectedly gets is the sense of belonging and friendship that Kevin, Stuart, Bob and Otto give him.
