Next year, Disney’s live-action film The Little Mermaid will hit theaters , featuring many familiar characters as well as some new ones. Director Rob Marshall recently told Entertainment Weekly that in addition to strengthening the role of Prince Eric (Jonah Hauer-King), a new character will also be introduced – his mum.

I’m sure the original creators would agree with me that Eric is a wooden, classic prince character with little going on. There is a whole story in our film that is being developed. He has a mother , the queen, who is a brand new heroine. He’s kind of like Ariel in a way. He doesn’t feel like this is where he fits in, it’s not his world. These two kindred spirits find each other and learn about prejudice and breaking down barriers and walls between these two worlds.

Marshall said.

Official Disney Description:

The Little Mermaid , the visionary adaptation of the studio’s Academy Award-winning musical classic directed by Rob Marshall, will be released exclusively in theaters nationwide on May 26, 2023. The Little Mermaid is the beloved story of Ariel, a beautiful and spirited young mermaid with a thirst for adventure. The youngest of King Triton’s daughters and the most adventurous, Ariel is eager to learn more about the world beyond, and during a visit to the surface falls in love with the perky Prince Eric. Although mermaids cannot interact with humans, Ariel must follow her heart. She makes a deal with the evil sea witch Ursula that gives her a chance to experience life on land, but ultimately puts her life – and her father’s crown – in danger.
