The project will be written, directed and produced by Dean DeBlois, who will return to directing the film after directing most of the animation. Marc Platt will be producing. Legally Blonde , and the upcoming movie Wicked . The live-action version of How to Train Your Dragon has even received a release date – March 14, 2025. The production is reportedly already in the process of casting. Unfortunately, details about the plot of the new project are not yet known.
This will be the first time DreamWorks animation has been transferred to live-action. Based on the books by Cressida Cowell, the How to Train Your Dragon franchise spanned three films from 2010 to 2019. The series was a huge success that also spawned numerous short films and TV spinoffs, including Riders of Dragons, Riders of Dragons: The Rescue Crew, and Riders of Dragons: The Nine Worlds.
Will there be a How to Train Your Dragon reboot ?
As DeBlois explained in 2019, the ideal way to continue the franchise in animation would be to set it in a completely different era.
We tried to provide a satisfying ending, which ultimately meant that Hiccup and Toothless would go their separate ways and develop into adulthood. For me, it’s a satisfying ending, and that was the intention – to really bring back the disappearance of dragons and make them legendary. But we viewers know they’re still around. I do n’t own the series, but if Dreamworks wanted to reopen it at some point, I would hope it would be a different timeline and new characters. The history of Hiccup and Toothless should remain intact.
