Bailey, an American actress and singer nominated for a Grammy, will play the title role of a young mermaid. The heroine of the story that Disney previously told us in The Little Mermaid from 1989, dedicates her unique voice to be able to go ashore and see it not as a mermaid, but as a human.
We finally got the opportunity to see Halle Bailey in this role, as new, high-quality photos of the actress from the set appeared on the web. The photos you can see below show Ariel in her famous sail dress. The mermaid also appeared in the animated prototype.
The choice of Halle Bailey as the lead role was controversial for some Disney fans, so the actress had to face criticism. However, as she herself said:
I feel like I’m dreaming and I’m just thankful. I don’t pay attention to hate. I just feel that this role is much more to me and it will be beautiful. I’m just excited to be part of the production.
The production director will be Rob Marshall, who we can associate with Mary Poppins Returns, or Chicago – an Oscar-winning musical. The Little Mermaid will be able to boast of hits known from the animated prototype, as well as new songs. Some of them will be written by Alan Mennken and Lin-Manuel Miranda, two famous authors.
The cast, in addition to Bailey, also includes Jacob Tremblay (Florek), Awkwafina (Blagier), Daveed Diggs (Sebastian), Melissa McCarthy (Ursula), Jonah Hauer-King (Prince Eric) and Javier Bardem (King Triton).
We were still not able to see the trailer for the production and know the dates when it will debut in theaters. Many speculate that the movie can be expected in the second half of 2022 or early 2023.
