The life of a mutant is difficult – review of the comic book “Ultimate X-Men”, vol. 2

M for mutant

Now we have the opportunity to learn about the further fate of the heroes. And there are quite a few of them. The second volume consists of several different stories. It all starts with the story of Gambit saving a little girl from Hammerhead, but this is just an introduction that has nothing to do with the main plot. Perhaps this mutant will return in the next parts. Next we watch the team traveling the world with Professor Xavier in order to promote his book and try to convince people that mutants are not dangerous at all. Their mission, however, is interrupted by Charles’ son who terrorizes humanity. In the next story, we return to Savage Land, where a supercomputer intends to take over the world. Kitty Pryde joins the team. There is also a place for the Hellfire Club trying to use Jean Gray to bring Phoenix to Earth. There is also an ongoing case of compensation for injuries sustained by Iceman in the background. The whole theme is linked by the Brotherhood of Mutants and Magneto, which, contrary to popular belief, is not dead at all.

The script for the second volume of Ultimate X-Men was created by Mark Millar, a screenwriter well known in the world of comics. He was responsible for such titles as Swamp Thing , The Flash , Kick-Ass , Fantastic Four and the Civil War event . Another thing to put a plus on the author’s account is plotting. First, we slowly discover the secret related to David, Xavier’s son, and then we learn about the mysterious investors and their plans for Jean Gray. In the background, however, we observe Magneto, unaware of his past and power. So we can only guess that nothing good awaits the mutants.

Different views on homo superior

Over Ultimate X-Mena few cartoonists worked. Adam Kubert, the creator of almost half of the notebook, had to spend the most time. We could admire his graphics on the occasion of the first volume. It must be admitted that the artist brought a breath of fresh air to the team of mutants, and although we can still easily recognize Wolverine or Storm, the change of hairstyle, adding facial hair or slightly changed facial features look very good. Seemingly the same heroes, but still different, from an alternative reality. The colors and smooth movements also look beautiful. The same can also be said about the frames prepared by Chris Bachalo or the famous Esad Ribic. Everyone did what they had to do, although they tried rather to follow Kubert and only small details reveal that we have the work of other cartoonists ahead of us. Kaare Andrews took a completely different path. He took a risk and opted for a cartoon style. His pictures bring to mind a bit less colorful and mangaCamera or Winx Club . In the end, the effect turned out pretty good. At least as an addition to several pages. The entire X-Men album created in this way would probably be heavily criticized. And so we get a pretty eye-catching bonus.

We are waiting for the continuation

The first volume of Ultimate X-Men was certainly a new hand for the famous mutants and the introduction of the group into the 21st century. Even though it’s an alternate reality, we could see this version of homo superiors on Earth-616 as well, and no fan would blame Marvel. The second volume is a continuation of the adventures that also does very well. Admittedly, there is no such surprise here, because we managed to meet the characters in the new version, but the author gave us more secrets, a fast-paced action, and introduced gambit, Kitty Pryde or Betsy Braddock to the plot. From the visual side, it is also impossible to have reservations. So the only thing left to count is that the next part, which is due to be released in our country in August thanks to the Egmont publishing house, will not disappoint us either!
