The Last Tavern recommends – 10 horror movies for Halloween!

Halloween is a holiday that has reached us straight from the United States and is extremely popular in Poland. Nothing unusual! Fear of witches, vampires, werewolves and ghosts accompanies us from an early age. Who has never heard of the witch from the fairy tale about Hansel and Gretel or the evil wolf from Little Red Riding Hood, who can be considered the progenitors of modern creatures, be the first to throw a stone. Halloween can be spent in several ways: by going to a fancy dress party at the club or an intimate party. Today, however, we have a proposal for those who prefer to spend their Monday evening in the privacy of their home, organizing a marathon of horror films. Here’s a list of 10 Halloween horror movies straight from my drawer!

Halloween (1978), dir. John Carpenter

We open the list with a loud bang! A Halloween horror movie marathon would not have been possible without Carpenter’s cult horror film. Michael Myers is one of the most famous movie psychopaths. The production itself has had many sequels, and today also a new trilogy ( retcon ) directed by David Gordon Green. Brutal, mysterious and supernaturally powerful, the antagonist provides a juicy dose of blood, horror and darkness. Today it may not be as impressive as it used to be, but class is class!

Others (2001), dir. Alejandro Amenábar

Others are a horror game definitely for fans of gothic tales. Grace and the children move into a huge, old and dark house. The family does not leave their place, because the woman’s children suffer from a disease that makes them avoid sunlight. Soon after they move, the heroes begin to notice someone’s presence. The disturbing, evocative and enigmatic film directed by Alejandro Amenábar is one of those that sow in the viewer the seeds of anxiety that sprout as the plot unfolds. Apart from the horror, the atmosphere plays an important role in the film, as well as the unhurried narration. The main role is played by Nicole Kidman, whose presence guarantees acting on a solid level.

Shutter Widmo (2004), dir. Banjong Pisanthanakun/Parkpoom Wongpoom

Asian horror films can terrify many seasoned viewers. Shutter Widmo is one of those horror movies, after which you must see the way to the toilet with the lights on. Tun and his girlfriend hit a woman to death. After escaping from the scene, the man is persecuted by a being from another world. As befits productions from Thailand, there is also a second bottom here. The story carries a sad and terrifying punch line.

Dead Silence (2007), dir. James Wan

“Beware of the gaze of Mary Shaw, instead of children she had a hundred dolls, and if you see her in a dream, may God protect you from screaming,” says a gloomy and ominous nursery rhyme that scares unruly children in one of the small American towns. Dead Silence is the story of a man named Jamie who receives a ventriloquist doll one day, and his wife dies shortly after. Conducting his own investigation and trying to find the recipient of the mailing, the man comes across the legend of Mary Shaw – a ventriloquist from almost 70 years ago, with whom children were missing in the area. The creator of the Presence with this film opened the gate to world horror. The production itself is a must-see in James Wan’s repertoireand at the same time the perfect choice for a Halloween horror marathon.

The Uninvited (2009), dir. Charles Guard / Thomas Guard

Crashers is a horror movie with thriller elements. As a result of a family tragedy, Anna is in the psychiatric ward. When she returns home, her father informs her of the engagement to Rachel, who was once their mother’s caretaker. Guard brothers film is a great, but quite moving story about loss and trauma with an original twist. The picture will confuse many viewers. It is worth inviting the Party Crashers to the TV screen on Monday evening with horror films.

Sinister (2012), dir. Scott Derrickson

Sinister is a must for all fans of horror movies with Ethan Hawk in the lead role! After moving, the author of crime stories finds a projector with old tapes in the attic. While watching the materials, he discovers the shocking truth about the new home and its previous occupants. Derrickson, director of Exorcism by Emily Rose , has created an imaginative horror movie that will taste like a punch at a Halloween party.

Presence (2013), dir. James Wan

Who has not heard of the most famous pair of paranormal researchers in the world – Ed and Llorraine Warrenach, who cannot be missing from the Halloween horror movie marathon at home? Presence is the perfect item for people who like scary ghost stories. A Warren couple come to a remote home to help a demon-tormented family. This is already the second position from James Wan in this list, which is worth watching on Monday evening.

Babadook (2014), dir. Jennifer Kent

What is the title Babadook ? An imaginary and terrifying creature living in a child’s mind? A demon that disrupts the peace of a mother trying to build an emotional bond with her son? Or maybe the unworked trauma after the loss of a loved one? One thing is certain – Babadooka can be boldly classified as one of the most enigmatic creatures, who shares an aversion to a manicurist with Freddy Krueger. Great music and a dense atmosphere of horror mean that some of you will probably watch the movie, just peeking out your eyes from behind the covers.

A Quiet Place (2018), dir. John Krasinski

One of the best horror movies of the last decade, which has been continued. A Quiet Place tells the story of a family of five living in a world dominated by monsters sensitive to even the slightest noise. How do you survive in a terrifying reality where the softest murmur can cost your life? Krasinski’s film won several awards, including the one for Horror of the Year, and received a total of over 20 nominations. Horror fans can count on an interesting screening just in time for a Halloween evening.

House at night (2020), dir. David Bruckner

One of the most interesting horror movies of recent years. The Night House tells the story of a woman named Beth who hides his secrets after her husband’s death. David Bruckner has created a brilliant horror movie. On the one hand, production can make you shiver on your back, and on the other, make you reflect more deeply on interpersonal relationships. Extremely gloomy and minimalistic image will be the perfect complement to the Halloween horror movie marathon.
