It’s a new story with a completely different background and new characters. We managed to create a completely different visual language… one that is still recognizable as Pan, but at the same time interesting and fresh.
– explained producer Nina Jacobson earlier this year .
What is the Hunger Games prequel about ?
The Ballad of Birds and Snakes presents us with a completely new, intriguing story. Years before he became the tyrannical President Panem, 18-year-old Coriolanus Snow (Tom Blyth) is the last hope for his fading house, a once proud family that has fallen out of favor in the post-war Capitol. As the tenth annual Hunger Games approach, young Snow is troubled when he is assigned to mentor Lucy Gray Baird (Rachel Zegler), a girl from the poor District 12.
However, after Lucy draws Panem’s attention by singing defiantly during the reaping ceremony, Snow remarks that he might be able to tip the scales in their favor. Combining their showmanship instincts and newfound political sensibility, Snow and Lucy’s race against time for survival will ultimately reveal who is really the bird and who is the snake.
The film’s cast also includes: Hunter Schafer, Jason Schwartzman, Laurel Marsden, Viola Davis, Peter Dinklage, Jose Andrés Rivera, Ashley Liao, Mackenzie Lansing, Irene Boehm, Cooper Dillon, Luna Kuse, Kjell Brutscheidt, Dimitri Abold, Athena Strates, Dakota Shapiro, George Somner and Vaughan Reilly, Lilly Maria Cooper, Sofia Sannchez and Max Raphael. Nina Jacobson will executive produce alongside her producing partner Brad Simpson, as well as Lawrence, Collins and Tim Palen.
