Starlight. Star Flash is a science fiction comic book about a heroic Earthling. Can such a story be inspiring and, more importantly, surprising?
The hero of the planet Tantalus
Imagine that the Earthling is suddenly thrown onto an alien planet. There is a dictatorship there, and this newcomer, full of ideals, decides to help the local community. We can only imagine that many epic clashes will take place, and the main character will have a real nut to crack. Aliens have advanced technology, but what is this for our hero, it is known that he will win anyway. However… it happened forty years ago. Duke McQueen overthrew the dictator, but he is now retired, and everyone thinks he is a freak, because no one on Earth believed in his cosmic adventures. And what is surprising? After the death of his wife, the only one who truly supported him, Duke feels lonely and unnecessary as never before. And here one night a rocket appears and a young boy sits at its controls,
You are never too old to be beaten!
The main character is a nice person. It’s impossible not to like him, just look at his epic duel with the dictator, which I will remember for a long time. In addition to flashbacks showing us what a Cossack young, fit Duke was, it is worth saying something about retired McQueen. And here, however, one can speak of a certain disappointment, because although he complains about problems with his joints, he fights and skin his opponents like a hotheaded, vigorous young man who is not afraid of anything. However, when it is accepted that this is another story about a hero, capable of great things despite his age, we can have a great time. Starlight. Starlight is simply a light and, most importantly, positive story that can refresh and engage you.
A two-faced duke
As for the graphics, I can understand those who love it, as well as people on the other side of the barricade. Most of the frames look brilliant, for example the appearance of Tantalus, spaceships or McQueen himself. However, there are also times when all that remains is to sigh. Not only is the background often missing, but sometimes the appearance of Duke and other heroes is too simplistic (for example, small black dots instead of eyes). I could also fault the angular shape of the tobacco smoke and ugly hair of Krish Moor, one of the most important characters in this comic book. Nevertheless, I am closer to saying that Goran Parlov has great talent.
Such doubts, however, are in no way raised by the edition. Hardcover, chalk paper, additions in the form of information about the authors, as well as a few alternative covers, what more could you want?
Is McQueen the hero we need?
I have to admit this is not what I expected as I delved into this comic book. I thought that the age of the main character would have a greater influence on his actions, but it is easy to get caught up in this story. In addition, its positive tone can warm the heart. Overall, it is an interesting science fiction story about an ordinary Earthman who can perform truly heroic deeds. It cannot be denied that we are dealing with a rather average man, but all the advantages I see in Starlight make it impossible to pass by him indifferently.
