The Great Return of Kajko i Kokosz – review of the comic book “Kajko i Kokosz – The Golden Collection”, vol. 1

Next year, Kajko and Kokosz will be celebrating their 50th anniversary; In connection with this occasion, Egmont launched the jubilee edition of Janusz Christa’s comics. Despite the passage of time, does the series delight as much as it did half a century ago?

Search for the golden cup

The first volume of the Golden Collection contains the entire story entitled The Golden Cup (previously it was published in two and three volumes). It was in this comic book that Kajko and Kokosz made their debut. The story begins with a plague of chickens that took over the city of Prince Mirmila. However, this is only the beginning of trouble, because the real plague is the newcomers under the sign of the black triangle. As if that were not enough, Mirmil loses his beloved cup (in the shape of a piglet, hence the original title of the story: Golden Piglet ), and refuses to drink from another vessel. And here Kajko and Kokosz enter the scene to find the prince’s property; the task turns out to be much more complicated than it might seem at first.

Great Companion versus Mirmil

The plot is interesting, it consists of funny and unusual threads, because there is, for example, a theme with the elixir of flying. The heroes are nice, it is impossible not to like them. I like the superstitious Kokosz, for example, because he believes that his strength depends on the length of the shadow. To tell the truth, I don’t want to believe that half a century has passed since the premiere of the Golden Cup . The graphics have not aged either, although originally the Golden Cup was black and white. The addition of color has significantly increased its attractiveness and thanks to this, the night frames look great.

What happened to the Golden Piglet?

Kajko i Kokosz – The Golden Collection is a gem worth having in your collection. The release looks just wonderful; you can immediately see that the series is celebrating its jubilee, which is why the publishing house has published an extensive journalism in this volume, including an interview with the granddaughter of Janusz Christa. Moreover, at the end of the comic there is a text by Krzysztof Janicz entitled Frames and contours . Thanks to it, we will find out how it all began, i.e. where the creator of Kajka i Kokosz drew his inspiration from. More importantly, many pages are devoted to Kajtkowi-Majtkowi and Koku, the series preceding Kajka i Kokosza. The text contains a lot of interesting news and a whole lot of curiosities, and the posted photos show what the magazine looked like, for example, in which the first comic strips of Janusz Christa appeared.

Is it worth being interested in the latest edition of Kajka i Kokosz ?

The answer to this question is very simple. Of course it’s worth it, because this is another universal series that has not lost its quality over time. The heroes are still nice and funny, their fates are followed with pleasure. The plot is captivating and it’s hard to break away from it. There are really some interesting plots in the comic, and there are also some funny gags. At Kajku i Kokoszu , both younger and older readers will have a lot of fun, while the latter will especially appreciate the extensive journalism, because thanks to it you can find out what it all looked like half a century ago.
