Spy Kids: Armageddon is now available on Netflix! Its director, Robert Rodriguez, reveals why he decided to bring the series back to life.
This weekend saw the return of the Spy Kids franchise , which hasn’t had a new movie in 12 years. Writer-director Robert Rodriguez has delivered what is essentially a reboot for Netflix titled Spy Kids: Armageddon . There are new stars, telling a completely new story, but maintaining the same overall tone and style. Without the original stars and the move to Netflix for the latest installment, some fans may wonder why Rodriguez decided to bring the series back into the spotlight.
According to the filmmaker, it is a continuation of the original franchise. Hollywood is all about creating franchise films and getting involved in different IPs that people love. Spy Kids is definitely a recognizable IP, but it’s something that isn’t owned by a large company or studio. It belongs to Rodriguez and he wants to take advantage of it when he has the opportunity.
What does the director say about it?
It’s hard to make movies in Hollywood that aren’t based on pre-existing material that the studio has. So when you can come up with your own story and make sequels to it, man, you’ll make as many of them as you can because it’s rare.

In the same interview, Rodriguez addressed the casting of this new Spy Kids film . Armageddon focuses on a new set of characters. The main children in this new film are played by Connor Esterson and Everly Carganilla, and the duo of Zachary Levi and Gina Rodriguez play their parents. Armageddon is the first film in the series without former stars Alexa PenaVega and Daryl Sabara. Rodriquez said he wanted to create a story with a different family at the center, especially since more than a decade has passed since the last film in the series.
I wanted to start a new family again. Since so much time had passed, it was important to just start the franchise over again and then go from there.

Rodriguez still wants to find a way to combine the two sets of characters at some point down the road if there are more Spy Kids movies in the future .
I’d like to bring back [the characters], I’d like to connect the worlds. It could still be in the same world, so if we do more movies, there could easily be older characters coming back.
