The devil is in the details – review of the comic book “Daredevil. Fearless “, vol. 7

After nearly four years of break, we return to the story in which Matt Murdock becomes the head of the Hand clan. How will the Devil from Hell’s Kitchen handle this situation?

Paved Hell is good intentions

Unbelievable as it seemed, Daredevil joined the ranks of his current enemy and became the leader of the Palm. His intentions were noble – he wanted to change her from within and make his people act in a righteous cause and take the side of good. Initially, he thinks that everything is going according to plan, but the organization has a completely different idea. Gradually, it begins to poison Matt Murdock’s mind and soul, thus summoning a Root Root. The turning point, in which the hero becomes the real Devil, is the clash with the eternal opponent – Bullseye. After this event, Daredevil plunges into darkness, which does not pour over the inhabitants of his beloved Hell’s Kitchen. Fortunately, friends come to the rescue, but will they make it?

Suddenly, it’s after the devil

The authors of the seventh volume of Daredevil. The fearless are Andy Diggle and Anthony Johnston, who took over the series from Brian Michael Bendis and Ed Brubaker. The first of them previously worked on such titles as Judge Dredd , Hellblazer and Thunderbolts. The second, in turn, is known primarily for his work on horror comics, which is also visible in the latest part of Matt Murdock’s adventures. In a few moments you can clearly feel the atmosphere of horror. The creators of course continue the thread started in the previous volume, but they do not intend to copy the style of their predecessors and give us something completely fresh. They have prepared a really solid and engaging story. They managed to perfectly balance the slow introduction to the plot, interspersed with interesting actions in the style of “superhero” that will not let us get bored. We can see how Daredevil tries to influence the Palm and how the organization itself strives to take over him. There are also unexpected twists and turns. More characters are also introduced, including Elektra, Iron Fist, Moon Knight, Ghost Rider and Wolverine, all for to lead to a spectacular showdown. Of course, I will not reveal its result, but I can assure you that there is no shortage of emotions. To further thicken the whole plot, Wilson “Kingpin” Fisk is also involved in the events. It is also worth mentioning the short but very funny performance of Spider-Man, who breaks the tense and gloomy atmosphere with his jokes. Of course, the most important thing here is the title character. It is his dilemmas, decisions and the struggle with himself that make up the theme (they are most emphasized). So we can, together with the Devil from Hell’s Kitchen, experience his ups and downs, sympathize with him and cheer him on. All fans of this superhero will surely be satisfied. Unfortunately, the album also has some drawbacks. Namely, there are a few threads that seem broken at some point. This is the case, for example, with the Thunderbolts unit formed by Norman Osborne. Marvel fans know very well that they have to look for the explanation in other comics, but sometimes a quick correction could be needed. The Punisher’s performance is even worse, as it appears and disappears without a word. Fortunately, these are not glaring errors and strongly affect the overall reception, but it is a pity that the creators of these few things have not been refined.

The devil is not as scary as he is painted

Although the script for Daredevil. Fearlessis really good, the comic looks even better in terms of graphics. Several artists have worked on it, including Billy Tan, Roberto De La Torre and Davide Gianfelice. All of them fulfilled their tasks and with a vengeance. We have the right dose of darkness here, when we are in Shadowland and when Matt’s soul begins to be possessed by a demon, there are beautiful shots from a trip to Japan, and there is also no shortage of brutality during a superhero clash. It also manages to capture the atmosphere of Hell’s Kitchen, as well as the atmosphere of the whole of New York. Perhaps some people will complain about the end of the notebook in a completely different atmosphere, but it is worth noting here that this is a completely new story and a prologue to the adventures of Daredevil. That’s why it’s good that it stands out in some way from the rest of the album.

The devil is in the details

For the publishing of the seventh volume of the Daredevil series. Fearless on the Polish market corresponds to Egmont . As with the other parts, also this time we get a thick album bound in a hard cover. Despite its size, it can be held freely and is easy to read. At the beginning, we also get a short summary to help us remember what happened before. There is also a gallery of alternative covers. The publishers have also thrown in several ninja costume designs from the Palm clan that may prove to be a good lesson and inspiration for aspiring cartoonists.

Ride your soul – there is no hell!

The newest part of Daredevil’s adventures turns out very well. The authors did not have an easy task, trying to overcome the level of difficulty set by their predecessors. Have they succeeded in this art? Probably not, but not much was missing. It is to be praised for the courageous decision to choose freshness and tell the story in your own way, without trying to copy Bendis or Brubaker. Psychological threads are perfectly combined with a typical superhero carnage. From the graphic side, everything looks beautiful. Fans of the Devil from Hell’s Kitchen will certainly be satisfied and with bated breath will follow the events presented in the notebooks, but also other fans of Marvel or superhero comics in general will have a lot of fun.
