The secrets are revealed
In the previous section, we met the last members of the Blaine family struggling with the family curse. The siblings Zach and Mackenzie and their uncle Chase move into their old mansion. There, too, they are harassed by the ghosts of the past, although they are not fully aware of why this is happening. Little by little, however, they discover the secrets of their ancestors. They learn from the diaries that it all began in 1674, when their great-grandfather committed murder. As the visions sent on them show, he was not the only one who had human blood on his hands. In this situation, the three of them have to unite and find a way to undo the spell, or let the wraiths end their lives.
Was something missing?
The Estate scriptwritersare Tim Daniel and Michael Moreci. Both men have already proved that they can build tension and create an atmosphere of horror. As it turns out, you do not need liters of blood, a pile of corpses or macabre scenes, but the introduction of an appropriate dose of mystery and an interesting ghost is most welcome. The theme of time travel appears in the second volume. More secrets from the Blaine past are also gradually being revealed. Relationships linking individual family members, not only those still alive, are also skillfully built. The struggles of each of them with themselves are also very skillfully shown. At times their madness and anguish are almost felt, and thus the recipient certainly begins to sympathize with them and experiences their fate even more. There were also a few twists, thanks to which history is truly followed with bated breath. Unfortunately, apart from numerous praises, there will also be some criticism. As already mentioned, the climate is built slowly, which is a big advantage. At some point, however, it starts to accelerate unexpectedly, as if the creators suddenly realized that they had little time left to finish and that they had to make up for everything. The solution to the whole matter, on the other hand, seems a bit too easy. It’s not tragic, but after the great introduction and development of the action, I was hoping for a spectacular finale. Meanwhile, we can only call it not the worst. The creators probably set the bar too high for themselves and therefore did not manage to overcome it, and therefore fully satisfy the reader. the climate is built slowly, which is a big advantage. Visually unchanged
For the graphic design of the second volume The Estatereplies Joshua Hixson, assisted by Kurt Michael Russell in his work. The same duo also worked on the previous part, so as far as the drawings are concerned, nothing has changed – we are still dealing with beautiful illustrations. It is them that emphasize the atmosphere of horror that surrounds us and make us feel goose bumps while reading. The following frames almost speak to us and it would seem that we can hear the sounds of dripping water or the murmurs of ghouls. The play of colors also emphasizes the emotions accompanying the characters and their struggle with the curse and their own problems. The individual backgrounds were also perfectly prepared. We will easily realize which scenes take place in the 17th century and which in 1974 (because then the main action of the comic takes place). Ultimately, you can’t have any objections.
It was worth it
The previous part of the Estate , published in our country by Lost in Time , was released on the market in mid-2020. Some time has passed since then, and although the title is memorable, probably not all the details could be remembered. But in this case, it even turned out to be good! Personally, I was very eager to re-read the first volume, and I was drawn back into the history of the Blaine family. As for the comic book release, it is worth mentioning that there is also a cover gallery attached to it, which makes a great impression. Each of them has been styled to resemble an old, damaged photograph or a postcard with packaging for a VHS cassette. It gives an amazing effect and is a great complement to the whole.
A classic of the genre?
Although The Estate has some interesting twists that may surprise the reader, on the whole it must be recognized that the plot does not bring anything revealing. However, thanks to the great graphics, perceptible atmosphere and a solid dose of horror, we feel as if we are reading something completely new. Every fan of horror will feel at home here and appreciate the craftsmanship with which the notebook was prepared for us. I believe that if the story were brought to the screen and worked out like a comic book, it would have a chance of becoming a hit. And this despite a somewhat disappointing ending.
