Teen or panda? – review of the DVD of the animation “To nie wypanda”

What do pandas , teenagers and boy bands have in common? It is all combined by the brilliant It’s not a rush, which unexpectedly turned out to be the most interesting and emotional production of Pixar since the times In my head does not fit. But is it worth adding to your home DVD collections?

In Pixar’s animation, we meet Mei, a confident teenager, an exemplary and diligent student, and above all – an ideal, well-behaved daughter. Puberty turns the girl’s orderly world into chaos, and her overprotective mother stays with her. In addition, the heroine falls victim to a family curse, which makes Mei feel strong emotions, turning into a huge … panda.

Mei like She-Hulk?

It’s been a long time since I have seen such a wise, yet full of heart and warmth animation. The creators of To nie wypanda perfectly reflect the character of today’s teenagers, the difficult moments they experience, their first fascinations or simply adoring their beloved idols. The creators do it with remarkable ease, as if they lived among them, unlike many scriptwriters who unknowingly introduce into their films the artificiality and misunderstanding of contemporary youth (the so-called boomers). On the screen we see full-blooded heroes, often unable to cope with their problems and feelings. However, the more serious tone of the production is discharged by Mei and her friends’ peculiar humor.

Animation is for me a spiritual heir . In My Head and Tangled . Like the first one, it makes viewers aware of the complexity of our emotions and the problem of controlling them, which was presented in the form of a transformation into a panda (similar to She-Hulk). We also have here, as in the story of Rapunzel, a possessive mother, blinded – in this case – by the love for her daughter and the fears of growing up. The film is also an interesting lesson for parents who can understand them better by presenting their teenagers’ problems in a simplified and exaggerated way. Animation also gives children a chance to develop greater empathy towards their parents and understand their fears. Importantly, it’s not a rushthanks to its humor, it also perfectly reaches younger viewers who watch it through the prism of comedy.

Press materials of the film “To nie wypanda” by Galapagos Films

Blocky solidity

The DVD version of the film is not impressive. The cover is another clunky copy-paste from earlier editions. Simple graphics can also be found directly on the CD. The picture and sound quality, as always with the Galapagos, remains consistently high, which is why the image looks great on the screens of our TV sets

After launching the disc, as always in the case of Disney, we get an intro related to their productions. A simple menu displayed on one of the movie themes should not be a problem also for younger viewers. Thanks to this, our kids can easily turn on their favorite scenes from the movie, to which they would like to return, or choose the appropriate soundtrack depending on their skills or knowledge of English.

Unfortunately, the DVD edition This is not a disaster is devoid of valuable special additions. It is difficult to consider the version of the film with the comments of the creators as such. It does not introduce too many interesting facts, and its reception may be difficult due to the lack of subtitles in Polish.

Panda sequel Out of your head?

Pixar studio has accustomed us to wonderful animations relating to cultural diversity, experiencing emotions and difficult moments in our lives, and the production of insanely wise, and at the same time full of warmth. This is exactly such a film is This is not a rush combining the issues of growing up, the characteristic ease of teenagers, references to legends from the East and the feeling when you finish the screening and your heart gets warmer. I recommend buying at least the DVD version, because it’s one of those animations that you will keep coming back to from time to time.
