Super Mario Bros. The film is a perfect combination of two worlds. The heritage of the cult video game meets the tradition of the animated film here. It is also the first ever joint production of Nintendo and Illumination, which brought a lot of emotions to the creators on both sides.

It was a great honor for me to work with Shigeru Miyamoto,” admits Illumination director Chris Meledandri.

On the other hand, Super Mario Bros creator and film producer Miyamoto recounts:

Every Hollywood producer I’ve come across so far has usually started out explaining how our game can be a success as a movie. But talking to Chris was different. We immediately noticed how similar we think about the creative process. That’s why this movie was produced in a way similar to how I make games. Thanks to this, I was able to find it well.

Making a film is not only a philosophy of work, but also making very specific decisions. The creators had to decide how they wanted to tell the story, which characters to present to the viewers, and which creators they would entrust with this project. The choice fell on the director duo of Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic, two dedicated fans of the game:

Playing Super Mario Bros. was my favorite pastime in my childhood – admits Jelenic. “Turning on this game right after coming home from school has always been very emotional. So when we got the chance to work on this project, the most important thing for me was to tap into those exact same emotions and translate them into a cinematic experience.

Miyamoto admits:

Their personality and love for the series won me over. When I met the directors for the first time, we immediately made the decision to start this cooperation.

Translating the language of the game into the language of the film is not an obvious task. The directors intensively refreshed their childhood memories by playing various games from the series and discussed with each other trying to determine the most important theme of the game, which could also become the basis for the film. Finally found the answer:

The most important theme is perseverance,” explains Horvath. “It’s about never giving up. The only way to lose in Super Mario Bros. there is surrender, but if you just keep playing you will eventually get better and eventually beat Bowser. This is what became the theme of our film.

For the entire filmmaking team, the main goal in making the film was to create something that everyone would enjoy:

Whether it’s someone who has played the game before or someone who has never seen Mario before. Whether it’s a child or an adult, Miyamoto explains.

Jelenic adds:

It’s a movie about life and family. We hope people will watch it, have fun, and see that we treat these iconic characters with the respect they deserve.

Super Mario Bros. The film is one of the biggest cinema hits of 2023. In Poland, it has already been watched by over 1.2 million viewers. It will be released on DVD on August 24. You can read our review of this production at this link .
