It turns out that the animated series will not be intended for younger audiences. We don’t know the exact structure yet, but it’s definitely adults that director Mindy Kaling is targeting.
It just didn’t seem like anyone had done it before. There are so many adult cartoons we love with Charlie (series co-creator) – Rick and Morty , Harley Quinn are great shows. And we just thought these characters… so well suited to the adult version.

What will Velma be about ?
This is a comedy animation intended for adults, which is based on the origin of the title character. This original and humorous story reveals the complicated and colorful past of one of America’s most beloved mystery hunters and the entire Scooby-Doo gang.
Mindy Kaling also voices Velma. In the original version we can also hear Constance Wu (Daphne), Sam Richardson (Shaggy), Glenn Howerton (Fred) and Jane Lynch, Wanda Sykes, Russell Peters, Melissa Fumero, Stephen Root, Gary Cole, Ken Leung, Cherry Jones, Frank Welker, “Weird Al” Yankovic, Fortune Feimster, Yvonne Orji, Sarayu Blue, Nicole Byer, Ming-Na Wen, Shay Mitchell, Debby Ryan, Kulap Vilaysak and Karl-Anthony Towns.
In an October interview with Charlie Grandy for ComicBook.com, we can learn about a potential crossover of the series.
If this is successful, there will absolutely be talks about doing more. Again, this honors the original show, and we want to honor the original Scooby as much as we can. So, we’ll be looking for ways to take our shot.
Velma premieres on January 12, 2023 on HBO Max. Who’s waiting?
