Spies like us – review of the comic book “Duckburg: Rain of Money”, vol. 11

So far, most of the volumes of Kaczgród contain really significant stories in which debuts of such characters as Granit Forsant or Scrooge McDuck have appeared. However, this was only the tip of the duck legacy. Also this time we will find something new.

Counter-counter-counter-counter-counterintelligence

I will start my review quite unusual, because it is not the title story, but one that aroused a lot of controversy – not only in my head, but also in the world. Dangerous game is a comic book about how Donald and his nephews find themselves in the midst of an intrigue in which the fate of the whole world is at stake. Of course, the brave ducklings are trying to stop the spy network and save humanity and ducklings. What’s interesting about this comic? First, the fact that we have one of the few opportunities to admire normal human faces next to these ducklings. Apparently, after publishing this comic, Barks got an order to put only people with “dog” noses, that is, as we know them today. I must admit that human faces are quite realistic and resemble the figures of Dutch painters. The comic itself stretches at times, although the setting of the action takes place at the right moment.

But what else bothers me? Linguistic immersion. So far, the editions of Duckburg takes care that characters using a foreign language actually “speak” it on paper. Accents and correct spelling were taken care of. Well, here it was missing in the case of the Spanish language, which, as an Iberist, is quite eye-catching for me. Additionally, some strange “h” was added to the Spanish accent? Believe me, I have never heard anything like it while in Madrid, in the south or in the north of Cervantes’ country.

Inflation in the comic

The title story of Money Rain, which is nothing more than a lesson in economics, is worthy of interest . This 10-page comic shows us how the Scrooge loses all money and then gets it back – a pictorial representation of the inflation phenomenon. Due to a huge tornado, the money of the Scrooge is dispersed all over Kaczgród, which gives a huge injection of cash for the economy of this city. This in turn means that no one works, no one produces goods, these become more expensive and more money has to be spent again. This is well understood by McKwacz, who decides to take advantage of this situation and creates valuable raw materials from basic products. I encourage you to read this comic, especially if you want to understand the mechanisms of modern economics.

Something for the end

What else can I recommend to you? Maybe a crossover of Disney’s Cinderella and the history of Granny Duck. Well, Kajtek and Jacek – friends of Cinderella, who help the senior woman of the ducklings in the defense of the farm during the robbery, appear in Mice under the broom . Interestingly, the ducks have no problem understanding their mouse companions.

Another interesting story is the one in which the ducklings meet one of their greatest opponents, the Be Brothers. These bandits from Kaczgród were created by Carl Barks in the comic book The Terror of Beagle Boys , the title of which was translated into Polish as Operation Works . Although they appear briefly, it is implied on the last page of the story that Scrooge knows about them and is not something new to him in Kaczgród. As you can see, their fame was well established long before their visual appearance in the comic.

I could write more about many interesting comics, but it is worth reaching for them and reading them. We receive a volume filled with numerous family and comedy stories.
