Spies, detectives and secret organizations – a review of the comic book “Lewiatan”

Bendis is a surname associated primarily with good Daredevil comics. However, does the success of one hero translate into the entire universe or the entire world of superheroes? Well .. not, however, unless the author changes his concept.

What is Leviathan?

Adventures about Superman, created by Bendis, do not have a good reputation, but he does not give up and moves on. The script writer tells us how a secret spy organization kidnaps Clark Kent, who cannot get out of her trap. Is the Leviathan story really that extraordinary?

Brian Michael Bendis has been preparing us for the advent of Leviathan for some time, as you can see in the Man of Steel series. DC had other plans, however, and made Leviathan an enemy of the entire DC Universe, which Superman could not cope with. But who gave? A group of detectives headed by Lois Lane and Batman. The story itself does not have any great impact on the world of Batman and Superman and is quite unusual, it reminds us more of the struggles of Sherlock Holmes than the action known from the Rambo movies. Despite numerous twists and turns, fruitless clues and the feeling of omnipresent surveillance of Big Brother, nothing fully satisfies the reader. Of course, history defends itself, but it is not something groundbreaking, and this event might as well not have happened. All the attention focused on Superman’s spouse is to promote heroin without power and gadgets. However, Lois Lane without Clark Kent is not the same beloved of the Man of Steel, at least in the performance of Bendis. I’m not saying that Lane’s solo adventures are a bad idea, but so far no one has figured out how to present them to interest the reader.

Searching for quality in mediocrity

The whole story, based on the grand investigation, would be more suited to the Gotham bat world. Bruce Wayne as the greatest detective and at the same time James Bond in the world of leotards could handle this story on his own. However, I am glad that he is accompanied by other heroes. The choice of characters is most accurate, although the potential of each of them has not been used. Green Arrow mostly teases Robin, and Constantine and Zatanna don’t even show half their magical powers to investigate. And what is Deathstroke doing there? And why is there no Barry Allen, the greatest forensics technician? The most interesting story solution is probably discovering the identity of the main character. Nevertheless, his motivations are completely pointless, and the secret is hidden behind the unknown identity of evil disappoints and does not stay with us long, as was the case with the Knight of Arkham, for example.

Besides, he asks himself why Egmont included Superman: Leviathan Rising Special # 1 in one of his recently released titles when this issue appeared in Superman Action Comics Volume 2: The Advent of the Leviathan ? Could it be a jump on money? Expanding the volume and increasing the price of the product? If someone buys DC comics, it is rarely individual events , as he tries to follow the entire publishing house. It is different with occasional comics.

It’s hard for me to say if I like this Egyptian comic. I am inclined towards a positive opinion, although I can point out a few disadvantages. However, I think that the very idea for the story, individual characters and graphic design are the strengths that will make reading this work from Bendis pleasant for us.

Nasza ocena: 7.5/10

An interesting implementation of a spy novel in the DC world. Unfortunately, the narrative and elements of the presented world do not go hand in hand with a good idea.
