The curse of video games movies
Game screenings usually fail. I am aware that this is to some extent a generalization, but such a principle has already been adopted. Bringing console adventures to the big screen usually ends in a fiasco. I had the strongest hope that it would be otherwise with Uncharted . I love this Naughty Dog series from the first minute to the last minute of each part. Nathan Drake’s travels are my best memories with the PlayStation and they invariably inspire me to travel and discover the secrets of history. All the greater were my expectations for the film I am writing about.
Story
Briefly about the plot. We meet the young Nathan Drake, who makes some extra money as a waiter and petty thief. One day he meets Victor Sullivan, also known as Sully. He claims to know the missing brother of Drake, and they were also looking for the legendary pirate treasure. Their paths have parted, however, and Sully needs Nathan’s help to find his fortune. In the race for gold, they will be chased by a fanatical billionaire and an army of mercenaries.

Unfulfilled expectations
Unfortunately, but the adaptation met my expectations to a very small extent. I tried to be objective with all my strength. The film, however, turned out to be a blockbuster like many, trying to build on the love of a dedicated group of fans of Drake’s console adventures. Most of the themes seemed to be forced in and the spirit of the game was hardly felt here. If we look at Uncharted as an independent film, not related to the legendary series, we will definitely rate it better. If, however, we are directed to the cinema by the memories of the adventures with the controller in hand, we will probably have similar thoughts to the author of this text.

Spider-Man vol. 2
Let’s start with the main character. I understand that the creators wanted to show the so-called origin storyNathan. This return to the roots required the employment of a younger actor, which, by the way, opens the door for producers in the event of continuing the film series. Was Tom Holland the right choice after all? At this point, I will definitely put my fans at risk, but I don’t think so. Holland is a slightly altered version of his Peter Parker here. Identical behavior, same hairstyle, even a similar sense of humor. This is definitely not the Drake we know and like from the game. With Sully, things are a bit better. Mark Wahlberg may not look like the mustache on the console, but he plays the role of a rather cynical treasure hunter quite well. Apart from them, the cast includes a pretty well-reproduced Nadine as well as Antonio Banderas! The latter made a great impression on me as a ruthless millionaire.

Dad jokes out of place
I have already mentioned Drake’s “Parker” sense of cinematic humor. Now let me write a little more about him. Honestly, it was unbearable. Marvel films have already got us used to the blink of an eye and, it would seem, funny inclusions of the main characters during even the most serious clashes. It seems infantile and often spoils the reception of the scene, but it can be experienced. In Uncharted however, let’s face it, these biscuits have been taken to the next level. I don’t remember smiling even once during the screening. But when the heroes flying aboard a Renaissance ship say to each other, “Hey, Jack Sparrow, it’s not the time to goof off” because one of them is pretending to be steering the ship … well, it’s rather embarrassing. Do you enjoy the reference to another cultural text? Unfortunately no, it is presented in such an infantile way that we start to wonder if the creators are taking us seriously. It is rare for characters’ jokes to sound pitiful in their original production language. So I prefer not to think what it sounded like in the dubbed version.

Adventure movie, but this is not Uncharted
I really don’t want this review to sound like my intention is to mix Uncharted with mud. This movie is pretty solid, it has a great soundtrack (there are themes from the game), some historical curiosities, great special effects. However, it promotes itself as a screen adaptation of a brilliant series of computer games, with which it cannot match in the slightest. The movie is an ordinary blockbuster with not very bright jokes and notwithstanding the laws of physics. Console Uncharteddespite the immortality of Drake and the infinite resources of ammunition, it aspired to a more serious production, which is missing in the adaptation. The screenwriters, however, left the door wide open to continue. If it does, I hope they take advice from Naughty Dog on how to create an epic treasure hunt story.
We invite you to the movie Uncharted to the Cinema City!
