Spider-Man is no longer for the MCU

As it turns out, Spider-Man: Far From Home will be the last movie starring the Spider-Man in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

According to Deadline, Disney and Sony have not reached an agreement on the further use of Spider-Man in future MCU productions. Thus, the last two films in which the main character is played by Tom Holland will not be unrelated to the Marvel movie universe. For now, Jon Watts remains the director of these pictures.

The reason why Disney and Sony are breaking up is of course… money. Representatives of the Mickey Mouse company proposed to the bosses of the Japanese-based company an equal division of costs and profits from the future adventures of the spider man. The offer was also supposed to include productions from the so-called Spider-Man universe (such as Venom or Morbius ). Sony rejected this option and offered to stick to the current deal instead. Under it, Marvel Studios could use the superhero characters and several others to which they had no film rights. At the same time, the lion’s share of the profits from solo films with a hero crawling on the walls was taken by Sony – 95%. Disney, in turn, did not like this option. The talks ended there.

The disagreement between the companies can be considered, to say the least, surprising. After all, produced by Marvel Studios and Kevin Feige, Spider-Man: Far From Home became Sony’s highest-grossing film ever. Tom Rothman, head of the Japanese giant’s film studio, can lose a lot from this situation. His company had mixed luck with images related to Marvel comic characters.

Was Sony right in rejecting Disney’s new terms? It will probably turn out soon. Marvel, in any case, has nothing to complain about the lack of material for work. With Spider-Man gone, more attention may be paid to the X-Men or the Fantastic Four (early work on bringing these champions to the MCU is already underway).
