Small but tough guy – HyperX Alloy Origins 60 keyboard review

The keyboard is undoubtedly the most important peripheral device needed not only to operate computers, but also to play games. How does a small product with the HyperX logo cope with this task?

What is the keyboard like, everyone can see and it would probably be hard to find someone who would have a problem with at least scratching its appearance in general. However, apart from the experienced players working on this device every day, most people do not pay much attention to the quality of its performance. The more such people would be surprised to see what the HyperX Alloy Origins 60 presents.

The number in the name of this keyboard is not accidental, as it is a model that is forty percent smaller than its standard counterpart. The difference is visible to the naked eye when you hold a simple and tasteful box in your hands, the dimensions of which immediately reveal what we are dealing with. I must admit that the inside of the packaging has been very well thought out. After opening our eyes, we see a tightly foiled keyboard and a pocket for the manual, under a piece of cardboard there is a cable and a small bag with an additional space key, Esc and a simple disassembly button. The device itself has an aluminum housing that gives a lot of strength, but also increases the weight. A little over seven hundred and eighty grams may seem like a considerable burden, but in the case of gaming equipment, you can even speak of lightness.

Of course, such equipment is not only for keeping in a box and one day you have to connect it to a computer or console (it is compatible with the last two generations, both Playstation and Xbox). Here we discover another advantage of HyperX Alloy Origins 60, which is undoubtedly RGB lighting. The color change is extremely smooth, the color palette is satisfying, and the sharpness of the light has been appropriately subdued (unfortunately the photos cannot accurately reflect it). At this point, it is worth mentioning a dedicated program that allows you to compose your own color settings. It is true that it is assigned to the Microsoft store, and its operation is not very intuitive and it is easy to accidentally destroy your efforts, but the possibility of setting an individual color for each key is extremely satisfying. In addition, the application also supports other HyperX products that include RGB lighting, so it can be useful more than once. However, it was not without glitches, and in fact one problem. The aforementioned dimensions force the resignation of the functional and directional buttons (not to mention the numeric ones, of course) and placing them as additional shortcuts. It is true that they are clearly distinguished on the sides of the keys, but these markings cannot be backlit, which makes them very difficult to use in a dark room. Appearance, appearance, but functionality? The HyperX Alloy Origins 60 features mechanical switches and it must be admitted that they are extremely quiet for such a solution. Of course, clicking is more characteristic than in the case of membrane ones, but they are far from being annoying. Using them as much as possible meets the stringent gaming requirements. The reaction time and ease of use are definitely satisfactory both during dynamic games (tested, among others, on the Rocked League game during a stream on our YouTube tavern channel ), and during much calmer sessions. It is true that I have accidentally pressed the spacebar several times, but that it was only in the case of a fairly slow Euro Truck Simulator 2, it was probably me who was to blame.

Is it worth investing in a HyperX Alloy Origins 60 then? If used as intended, i.e. for games, technically absolutely. Unfortunately, the lack of a numeric keypad and the limitation of function and directional keys can be felt when typing larger texts. The price should also be mentioned, as almost four hundred and eighty zlotys, however, is not a competitive amount. So if you are financially ready for it and are looking for a typically gaming, solid keyboard, considering the purchase of this model may even be a good idea.
