Shrek 5 is in the works ! Illumination is also working on Sing, Secret Life of Pets and Despicable Me. CEO Chris Meledandri talked about all these plans during an interview with Variety promoting the Super Mario Bros. movie. While all of this is exciting, the real frontrunner here is Shrek 5 . The return of Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy, Cameron Diaz and others to iconic animation would be nostalgic bait for older moviegoers who probably already have children of their own. Also, thanks to the strength of the Puss in Boots series , there is a clear demand for stories set in the world of Shrek. Meledandri also sees this as a necessary dimension for what they will do next.
We anticipate the return of the cast. Talks are starting now, and there seems to be a lot of enthusiasm among the actors for a comeback. It’s not that different from the process we went through with Mario , where you look at the core elements that viewers have come to love, and you do everything in your power to honor those core elements. And then you work hard to build story elements and new characters that take you to completely new places. The original cast is a huge part of it.
Meledandri explained
Eddie Murphy has already asked to return to Shrek !
Earlier this year, Murphy was asked about his friend Antonio Banderas’ run in the Puss in Boots series . According to the comedian, Donkey should have had his own spin-off some time ago, due to the popularity of this character. It looks like his wish will probably come true.
If [DreamWorks] ever came up with another Shrek, I’d do it in two seconds. I love Donkey. They made films about Puss in Boots . I thought: They should have made a movie about Donkey. Donkey is funnier than Puss in Boots. I mean, I love Puss in Boots, but he’s not funny as a Donkey.

Reading this in the newspapers, Meledandri was absolutely delighted. He told Variety that this was further proof of how important these films were to many fans. At this point, many genres of animated family movies stand out for their toughness. However, few of them can boast the longevity of Shrek and all his spin-offs.
It’s proof of his strong enthusiasm for the role he played so brilliantly and really created with the artists at DreamWorks. I found this comment very exciting.
