“Shazam! Wrath of the Gods” on Blu-ray and DVD from June 14

Billy Batson, aka Shazam, is back in a big way! The wild, action-packed continuation of the beloved DC hero brings even more excitement, adventure and humor, as well as all-new enemies. Shazam! Wrath of the Gods on Blu-ray™ and DVD on June 14, plus a special edition featuring both Shazam movies on DVD!

 

While Billy is still trying to figure out how to reconcile his teenage life with his adult super-alter ego, three ancient goddesses come to Earth to reclaim their magic stolen long ago. The artifact they seek is capable of destroying the entire world, which means Shazam and his friends must fight for the highest stakes. But can a group of teenagers really save humanity?

Shazam’s next epic adventure had to mark the return of Zachary Levi to the role of a laid-back but sincere teenager. The film’s fast-paced action, new worlds, a rich roster of heroes, extremely menacing villains, mythologically significant stakes, and a distinctive kind of humor – everything that makes the Shazam movies so special made the actor know immediately that he wanted to be in the sequel, even even before reading the script.

When David and Henry told me what the concept for the second film would be, I immediately agreed. “I thought: these are great ingredients to build a really great continuation of what we’ve already created. I was so excited to be back in a role and crew that I loved so much. Being a superhero and being so funny is a really fun role to play.

The show’s director, David F. Sandberg, also returned to the helm of the show excited to continue the story. As he says:

At the end of the previous video, we showed the whole family as superheroes, but we only got a glimpse of them in that role. One of the most exciting things about working on this project was developing this thread – figuring out how they live as teenagers and how they work together as superheroes. And just as you might expect, they don’t always succeed. Like Shazam, they’re all still kids at heart, and they’re going through exactly what all kids go through.

But alongside all of that, according to Levi, there’s still one secret ingredient at the heart of the story that makes Shazam a hero for viewers of all ages:

It’s a dream come true! At some point in our lives, we’ve all dreamed of becoming some kind of superhero: someone stronger, faster, braver. That’s where comics came from – colorful pages full of fantasy, surrealism and magical realism, in which we can simply dive. Combining all of this with lots of heart, humor and charm, together with David’s direction, great script, amazing cast and crew, it comes together to make a superhero movie for everyone and just a really funny story.

Shazam! Wrath of the Gods not only continues the threads of the previous film, but also presents them on a much higher scale.

This film is much bigger than the previous one,” admits Sandberg. – We got a bigger sandbox to play with and we have more special effects that can make the movie a real experience.

Producer Peter Safran concludes:

Everything that viewers loved in the previous film is now here, but as if pumped up on steroids.

Of course, while speeding things up was key, the developers felt it was just as important to honor the aspects of the first film that worked so well. As the director explains:

We’ve been incredibly lucky with the cast – the actors we have not only play family, they’re just like family. It was exciting to come back to this world with them and I think viewers will be excited too.
