Nowadays, there are more and more works aimed at young audiences. The animations present touching stories that are intended to teach the youngest moral principles, empathy and allow them to better understand the world. Does each story carry a profound message, and does it necessarily do so ? This is the first question that I asked myself after leaving the screening of Seals vs. Sharks .
Seals will not be suppressed
The plot of the animation of the Seals of the sharks account focuses on the conflict between the shark-torturers and the seals that fight to survive and have to risk a lot in order not to starve to death. Although the idea itself does not sound like a film for children, the eye-catching visuals, the lack of scenes showing violence and the general atmosphere mean it can be classified as such. The main characters try to prove to the viewer that you must not give up, that you must not live in fear, and that it is best to act in a team and not spend the summer in isolation. It all sounds very noble, but in combination with the extremely one-dimensional story, which focuses only on the aforementioned conflict , the animation seems to be simply simple in the world.
Will the kids like the movie?
At this point, you might think that no production for the youngest is very complicated. After the screening, however, you can get the impression that this film should be watched by slightly older children – fight and the use of (thankfully, toy) weapons are the main theme of the film, there is also death. However, older kids will also not be surprised, because the production repeats the themes known from the cult animations of Disney or Pixar to such an extent that it is quite easy to predict what will happen.
I don’t think the adults will have fun
When it comes to looking at this film from the adult perspective, I got the impression that it is a very simple story that does not require concentration and can be given to children “until dinner”. The characters of the main character, his friends, as well as the main character and his helpers are not elaborate in any way. It disappointed me, because I like to look for some other bottom in such works or analyze the characters in detail, for example to understand them better. I was also surprised by the main theme of the film, because in fact – as I mentioned before – there is no blood in it, and no scenes where seals are eaten are shown. However, violence is implied everywhere – outside the frame and even when the main characters use toy weapons in their own way. Is it right? I think each parent has to judge it for themselves.
Seals versus sharks versus spectators
To sum up, it is difficult to unequivocally assess this production. On the one hand, there are many lofty thoughts in it, but they still appear frequently in other animations. On the other hand, the main plot theme is a conflict based on violence. I think you can show this animation to a slightly older child, but not as an exciting evening session with popcorn and Coke, but rather as a background for dinner or fun. He will understand the story told without having to focus. This aesthetic and simple movie may be enjoyable, but the animation scenes for kids will certainly not win you over.
We would like to thank the Cinema City chain for the opportunity to watch the film Seals vs Sharks !
