Amazon Prime Video recently ended the first season of the epic series The Rings of Power which was fairly evenly matched. The new production showed us the times before Frodo and Bilbo Bagins and the events that led to what happened in The Lord of the Rings .

During the season finale, we saw Halbrand teaching the elves how to forge different materials together. As it turns out, however, he was actually Sauron, and it was a farce that was to get them to create the three rings. In the books, Tolkien wrote that the elven rings were the last to be created, and the show’s creators chose to ignore it to better fit their story. In a new interview with Inverse, writer Gennifer Hutchison revealed why they changed this detail.

Such a large part of the season was the elves, as well as Galadriel’s journey. So we wanted to tie the rings to this story. The idea was to narrow our focus to them and make these rings end the season. It made sense as a climax, as opposed to trying to manage the timeline in a different way.

The Rings of Power series overtakes its epic rival The Dragon House in the Nielsen rankings. The latest episode left fans shocked after the origin of the iconic location of Middle-earth was revealed. The co-creator wondered about the direction of the series’ development before the finale of the first season.

A huge theme in Tolkien’s work is environmentalism and the way machines and industrialization destroy the earth. We wanted it to be crucial all the time. This is a thing that pops up over and over again throughout the show. So we asked the writers: What if Mordor were beautiful? All bucolic like Switzerland. And then what could happen that could change him? We talked about soil poisoning – which starts in the first episode with the cow. Then we learn about the tunnels dug and the sulfur rises into the air. Everything is building towards this geologically realistic way of lighting a mountain that now obscures the sky for a very practical reason – Adar, our villain, sees the Orcs as his people who deserve a home where the sun does not torment them. We hope this will take people by surprise.
