Cool guys don’t look at explosions**
Contra was launched in 1988 by Konami and today is one of the most recognizable symbols of that era. As a member of a select squad of marines, you must infiltrate the base of an unknown organization and restore order on the island. The road leads our hero through the jungle, bases, a waterfall or snow-covered mountain peaks, however, there is no time to explore – the enemy’s hosts are numerous and still make the player’s life difficult.
They blow things up and they walk away
The way through the branches of enemies and blowing up enemy base helps us znajdźka cult in the form of a mysterious weapon called S . Everyone in the backyard knew it meant Super, or at least a Shotgun , but as a childhood teardown it should be noted that the official name of this weapon is Spread . It was the most powerful gun available – one press of a button fired as many as five (!) Bullets from the barrel of our reliable rifle. In addition to this one right weapon, we have a choice of M – a machine gun that was boring, L – a dangerous laser that quickly destroys nearby enemies, and F also known asFuck, I accidentally collected it again , which is slowly spinning fireballs.
Who’s got time to watch an explosion?
It is not a long game. Record holders beat Contra in less than 10 minutes, despite the fact that she has no shortcut to skip a few levels. However, the art of completing this game while mom is cooking pasta for dinner, only the most persistent and talented people succeed. Contra is difficult by today’s standards – everything kills our soldier with one blow, no matter if it’s a bullet, a flame, or we just collided with a running enemy. Combined with a lot of dangerous things that appear on the screen at the same time, it’s easy to make a mistake, and hence – deplete your spare lives.
Cause cool guy’s errand’s that they have to walk too
The aforementioned collision with an enemy or an incoming missile can take place in unforgettable locations that make up this unique resort. In total, we have to break through 8 locations. Most of them are in 2D, but you can’t talk about boredom – Contra’s creators took care of diversity. The second and fourth stages offer us a camera from behind the hero’s back and running to the sides, while my favorite map is Waterfall – the only location on which we move up.
Of course, for a wider audience, the most recognizable stage is undoubtedly the jungle – the first level of the game. Exploding bridges, soldiers with strange backpacks, snipers buried in bushes and stationary cannons – all this has been an obstacle from the very beginning. After tearing through this extremely dangerous variation of the Hundred Acre Forest, we face a defense system that has two guns and a clear sensitive point. After blowing up the entrance, our hero goes to the second stage – it is as effective as it is kitschy.
The more you ignore it, the cooler you look
Certainly it is part of the cult of the 80s – the game thematically fits the adventures of Arnold Schwarzenegger and Sylvester Stallone, who throughout the decade have constantly saved the world and in their spare time honored us with classics such as Commando , Rambo and Terminator. From the Japanese version of the game, we can learn a bit more about the plot and sides involved in the conflict. The story takes place in 2633, when representatives of the eponymous branch of Contra enter the action, bravely defending the world against all evil. Marines Bill Rizer (blue jeans) and Lance Bean (red pants) are tasked with eliminating the base of the terrorist organization Red Falcon, which has taken over an undefined tropical island. As every self-respecting player knows perfectly well that the red color symbolizes evil (examples from that era include, among others, the wolves of Pooyan, Ganon’s clothing from the Legend of Zelda series and totalitarian regimes ***), we are left to acknowledge our actions in advance too right and roll up your sleeves in front of the console.
And don’t think about the people you’ve killed
The game turned out to be so successful that a whole series of spin-offs / sequels was created. A year later, Super Contra appeared on the market, being much more edgy and apocalyptic. Later, the brand made its way through consoles (including PS2), and the fragmentation of the brand into small ones continues. In 2018, Garena Contra appeared on the App Store and Google Play, while a year later we were forcibly happy with the game Contra: Rogue Corps, which was officially mixed with mud by critics on all released consoles (42/100 version on Nintendo Switch, 56 / 100 Xbox One and 52/100 for PS4).
The last notable titles that breathed breath into the series are Contra ReBirth 11 years ago and Hard Corps: Uprising from 2011 for the Xbox360 / PS3. An interesting student project was also Contra 2028 – a three-dimensional production based on the Unreal Engine, which may be the future direction for the long-standing series. Despite all the pauses for the cult game, the era of 2D shooters ended in the 90s and during this decade only Broforce managed to mark its place in pop culture. However, one should ask what was the merit of this: the gameplay, or rather the humor (memicity?) Of the production. However, this is not just a problem with the production with the Contry logo – you can put into the same bag, for example, the Worms series, which already a dozen years ago unsuccessfully romanced the third dimension. However, I still hope for a worthy return of the series in the form of a game,
