Chris McKay (known from Tomorrow’s War, for example ) is responsible for directing the film , and Robert Kirkman ( The Walking Dead ) and Ryan Ridley ( Rick and Morty ) are also involved in the project . Details about the plot are not yet known, nor is it known how the film will connect with both parts of Dracula, which are produced by Universal Pictures.
In Abraham Stoker’s novel, Renfield is a psychiatric patient whose doctors suspect a mental disorder and delusions. The reality turns out to be quite different as he is Dracula’s servant. It is not known, however, whether the events depicted in the film will be heavily based on the book’s plot. The only known fact is that the action will take place nowadays.
Just like Igor is related to Victor Frankenstein, Renfield stays close to Dracula, even though he was not present in all the vampire king movie adaptations. The character of Renfield appeared, for example, in Dracula from 1992, directed by Francis Ford Coppola. The role of the bloodsucker’s helper was played by Tom Waits. Currently, this character is to be appreciated and the film is to revolve around him. In an interview about the production, Robert Kirkman stated:
We’re making an interesting movie for Universal Pictures that focuses on Renfield. It’s a story about him, his job as Dracula’s helper, and how lousy she is. It’s a fun, but also extremely brutal comedy about a character who hasn’t gotten enough attention in the movies so far.
The indicative release date has not been disclosed. It is known, however, that the film is to be released in 2023.
