In the first Iron Man, Tony Stark was kidnapped by the Ten Rings terrorist organization. In a deleted scene from Shang-Chi, Xu Wenwu (Tony Leung) returns from Afghanistan and talks about it with his advisor. He comments that everything is going well and Raza (already familiar to viewers as an Iron-Man hijacker and leader of Ten Rings in Afghanistan) is making money from the region’s instability.
The scene (one of the eleven published) not only points to a direct connection between Mandarin and Iron-Man, but also explains a significant hole in the plot. He suggests that Xu Wenwu’s wife died shortly before the events of the first Iron Man, and the Mandarin took control of his organization shortly thereafter. Therefore, the units of the Ten Rings organization that Tony Stark faced were easy to defeat.
