My first contact with the game Fluxx , released by the Black Monk publishing house, was three years ago at Pyrkon. After playing a few (a dozen) games with the basic version, I started looking for other, thematic versions. When I saw that it was possible to review the latest title in the series, I did not hesitate for a moment. So how did this position fare? You will learn about it in this review.
For the uninitiated
For the uninitiated, a few words about Fluxx will be useful firstas such. It is a card game whose rules of the game are created by the players themselves while playing. Depending on the situation on the table, you can set the required number of drawn and played cards per turn, a limit on the number of cards in your hand or additional restrictions. These rules are identified by the yellow Rules Cards. The victory condition determined by the Objective Cards is also dynamic, and usually consisting in having the appropriate Phant cards (in this version, for example, some Rick and Morty). In addition, this version does not exclude the possibility that all participants will lose and the forces of evil will win. To diversify the already changing fun, the deck consists of Action Cards, which can outweigh the scales in an instant, and Zons – usually making it impossible to win. In addition, we also find five Aid Cards reminding about the operation of the other types. As you can conclude, the game mechanics are quite dynamic. In the course of the game, from the basic two rules, you can come to a real oddity, in which on the table there are rules that are mutually exclusive or give quite unexpected effects.
Fluxx according to Rick and Morty
I would like to emphasize right away that I do not know this series in random order, but I know the most important characters and the outline of the plot. The advantage of this game is that the lack of knowledge of the cosmic adventures of a mad genius and his young companion in no way interferes with enjoying entertainment. People who are familiar with animation can smile under their breaths in reference and together recall their travels in the multiverse.
An additional element of this version of the card game are Sayings – some rules or abilities of Fantas and Zonks force the player to say a certain line when playing cards or involving it in every possible statement. Failure to respect this obligation may result in a beaten movement or, worse, a stain on honor and disapproval of the company.
To play or not to play, asks Morty
The answer to this fundamental question can in principle fit into any version of Fluxx . If you’re looking for a fast-paced, dynamic and addictive party game, a nice afternoon with your family, or a rainy evening with friends, Fluxx: Rick and Morty is definitely worth recommending. Especially for fans of the series who will easily catch all the flavors in the abilities of Fantas or the names of the Goals.
However , like everything else, Fluxx has its downsides. Boredom turns out to be the biggest one. After a few games, the game becomes predictable, and playing cards is not as fun as at the beginning. The possibility of mixing decks from different versions saves the situation a bit, but it does not change much in the long run.
All in all, Fluxx: Rick and Morty is a fun game to party with your friends. You can laugh, and its accessibility will encourage everyone to take part in the game. Unfortunately, in the long run, this straightforwardness is the biggest disadvantage of this position, and thus – it does not encourage you to play subsequent games.
