It seemed that the ending of Season Four would also sum up the whole of Fear the Walking Dead . But AMC decided to carry on with Alicia, Morgan, Al, Logan and the rest. Will the fifth season be refreshing?
Although initially Fear the Walking Dead was intended to be a series about the origins of the zombie epidemic we know from The Walking Dead , over 4 seasons the story coincided with the original story. The fate of the heroes also became similar, in which the constant struggle for survival is made difficult by other people, not the hordes of living dead bodies.
Painted corpses
The end of the previous season suggested a reset and a fresh start for the series. I am thinking not only about replacing almost all heroes, but also about taking on a completely new mission by our group. They decided to bring hope to the world and other survivors, trying to gather all those willing to rebuild the remnants of civilization. However, this reset is only theoretical, in practice, the series is once again on the track – building or protecting a shelter and a sneaky bad guy trying to thwart those plans. The only thing that changes is – again – the envelope of it all. The heroes are sent by plane to a radioactive wasteland, where something quite dark and mysterious happens, and Al, trying to determine the details, is kidnapped.
Still from the series
Nevertheless, it is difficult to criticize the series unequivocally. On the one hand, it drives us into a well-worn formula, on the other, however – the new shell is used very consciously and consistently constructed. It’s also nice to watch the duo of Morgan and Alice bravely continuing their mother’s legacy. Survival themes, which I love from the very beginning, also work great, and I regretted a lot when the series began to follow in the footsteps of its prototype, focusing on interpersonal dramas. That is why it gets all the more interesting, because at last people started to pay attention to the aspects of survival and such an issue as the so far never-ending gasoline. If the creators continue to narrate in this tone, Fear the Walking Dead will become a really decent position.
Brand new zombies
Before this happens, however, two major drawbacks remain: poor dialogues and plot construction. The former only requires a bit more careful writing. It would be enough for the characters to stop repeating excessively “key words” and the lines they say would immediately gain realism. The second significant flaw of the series is a harder nut to crack, although it is also possible to solve through the script. Some of the twists and turns are still quite artificial and forced. What’s more, combined with unnatural-sounding dialogues, the whole thing resembles a script generated by a bot.
Still from the series
Fear the Walking Dead is such an uglier sister of The Walking Dead . After the initial seasons telling about the first moments of the zombie apocalypse, the creators hit the seemingly more attractive tones, copying the threads known from the original series. Unfortunately, as a result of this, the series lost its uniqueness, becoming only a cheap copy. Only the exchange of the heroes and the rebuilding of the main threads allowed for a sufficient refreshment of the formula. And while it’s not yet the best series of the living dead in the (almost) starring role, it shows a timidly blooming potential. The more I am curious what the second part of the fifth season will propose.
