Quarterly from hell – review of “CD-Action”

The holidays are gone forever, but we can still have some of them with us! “CD-Action” is still available for the third quarter of the year, and the content, as usual, tempts with a solid dose of good text.

Ah, September – the time of inevitable approach to the autumn weather and the decreasing number of players playing online games, for rather obvious reasons. It is this month that we slowly start thinking about making ourselves a blanket burrito, reaching for a cup of hot chocolate and a nice read. Why not get your hands on the issue of “CD-Action” still on sale, filled to the brim with interesting content?

The opening pages of the quarterly present us with information about many upcoming titles that were announced at the fair replacing E3, which has been absent for several years. Here we have a handful of information about Senua’s Saga: Hellblade II , Avowed , Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora , Star Wars Outlaws , Ghostrunner 2 , Fable , Witchfire and many, many others. In addition to news from the industry event, we can learn something about Cyberpunk 2077: The Phantom of Freedom and House Fliper 2 .

Hell, despair and lots of zombies

The thing about reviews in the quarterly magazine is that, depending on which of the three months you purchase it, they may be read a little after the game’s release, but despite the time discrepancy, it is worth reading them, especially since currently with the “CD- Action” we can find a quite extensive evaluation of the latest installment of Diablo , which takes up almost eight pages! Apart from this giant, we can learn something about Darkest Dungeon II , which is a nicer and fresher sequel to the hit, focusing on the deeper meaning of the relationship between the characters; coherent and well-thought-out Dead Island II , unfortunately quite quickly boring with repetition and you can feel how long it took to create; Wartales , which is a turn-based game modeled on Mount & Blade, which lacked a solid plot to be truly happy. In addition, many other games such as The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom , The Lord of the Rings: Gollum , Everspace 2 , Star Wars Jedi: Survivor and a handful of noteworthy independent productions.

How artificial is artificial intelligence?

But what would “CD-Action” be if it weren’t for extensive journalism? It is worth looking at a not very long, but quite interesting column about the fact that we are still far from creating artificial intelligence, and the famous ChatGPT is only its not very successful simulator. It is also worth learning about the problem of ludonarrative dissonance, how game developers deal with it and sometimes use it, and what consonance is. If you like karaoke, you will definitely be interested in its history – from wandering Japanese musicians to great television shows and party games. Meanwhile, editor Łukasz Morawski has prepared a text for you about film adaptations of games – why many of them are mediocre or even rubbish and whether there are any guidelines that will help you approach this issue properly. And speaking of transferring to another medium…

The last of the mentioned texts can also be listened to in the form of an audiobook, which can be purchased via the PulpUp application. It must be admitted that it was made in a professional manner, the narrator speaks very clearly, and the subsequent points of the article are clearly emphasized. In my opinion, however, this recording is not without flaws. Yes, everything is technically correct, but the whole thing seems too sterile. Perhaps it’s just a matter of the fact that I don’t listen to audiobooks myself, preferring to engage with written texts, but I miss the delicate, emotional dirt. After all, this is a column about games and movies, not an academic lecture with a scientific tinge.

Do you want to know where the Diablo mythology comes from , what the history of the iconic Minesweeper is , how Japan plays or what the golden age of LucasArts was? All this and much more in “CD-Action”!
