Problematic headbands are disappearing from anime merch “Attack of the Titans”

With the finale approaching, it was decided to release a new, official merch in Japan. Armbands were one of the ideas, and there was some controversy about it. ATTENTION! The text includes spoilers from the first part of Season 4!

Attack on the Titans is one of the most popular anime at the moment, and the finale is fast approaching, keeping fans impatient. There is still some time until the premiere of the first episode of the last part, so the creators of the animation want to attract attention with the official merc. Wristbands were one of the ideas.

In the history of Hajime Isayama, they must have been worn by the Eldians who lived in specially designated areas in the Marley area outside the walls. They were supposed to indicate those who are from the “line of devils ” and after injecting the appropriate serum, they could turn into dangerous titans. The headbands are a symbol of Eldian’s oppression, their diversity and almost the lowest social status in Marley.

The entire 4th season is one big reference to World War II, however, it is not controversial and is not the subject of any dispute. The fans themselves had no problem with showing the Eldian wristbands in the manga or anime, which explicitly refer to those with the Star of David worn by Jews during the war, as they are part of Hajime Isayama’s story. The controversy arose when merchants revealed that the Eldian wristbands will go on sale. Fans around the world didn’t like the idea of commodifying them. Even though it is a fictional piece of clothing, the historical, true, dark side of their symbolism aroused outrage and disgust with the release of this merch. The people responsible for the merchandising of Attack of the Titans They listened to the votes of fans and finally the bands are not available for sale, and the producers of the last season issued an official apology yesterday.

This controversy did not, however, destroy the excitement of the upcoming finale. The premiere of the second part of the last season of Attack on the Titans  on January 9, 2022, and if you are curious what awaits you, check out the trailer.
