Problem with robots – review of the game “UglyDolls: An Imperfect Adventure”

At first glance, you can see that UglyDolls: An Imperfect Adventure  is a game aimed at a younger audience. Even so, I had a pretty good time and finished it in one sitting.

We have to get rid of the robots!

The game takes us to Uglyville – a small, colorful land inhabited by UglyDolls. Despite the name, the heroes are not nasty at all, but simply different, slightly different from the standard appearance of stuffed animals. However, in their imperfection, they are extremely nice and sweet. Unfortunately, their kind and carefree lives are disrupted by the invasion of robots from the city of Perfection, where any deviation from the norm is unacceptable. They begin to terrorize and attack anyone who does not live up to their idea of what normal is. The people of Uglyville must work together to get the robots back where they came from as quickly as possible.

Moxy i Ox

At the beginning, we can choose which character we want to control during the game. There are two heroes at our disposal: pink Moxy and green, resembling a rabbit Ox. However, this is a purely cosmetic decision. Moving around the land, we come across buttons that allow us to buy schematics for items that we can create from raw materials hidden in boxes scattered throughout the village. The constructed devices help in moving around Uglyville, enabling us to get to previously inaccessible places and helping in the fight and defense against robots, which we encounter at almost every step. Our task is to recruit the people of Uglyville who can support us in getting rid of the enemy and bring them to our command center. For each of them, we must complete a task As a rule, collecting a certain number of items presented in the game world as golden buttons. The mechanical opponents standing in our way can be divided into several types. There are shooting robots, chasing the player, and even those that use the afterburner when trying to catch us. They are not the smartest ones and are therefore easy to avoid. Once they notice our character, just run away and hide, e.g. between buildings. The missions are similar to each other, although they offer a bit of variety. Sometimes we have to sneak and trick the robots into the room so that they stop bothering us. Other times, the items we need are in buildings closed with special switches that must be activated at a certain time. Recruiting new residents can be boring at times, but the game can be completed in approx. 3 hours, so you won’t get bored. The world is also randomly generated, so each new game is slightly different.

A colorful town

The graphic design of the production combines two-dimensional and three-dimensional elements. The locations were made in full 3D, while the characters resemble the models taken out of the animated film. The whole thing is very colorful and makes a positive impression. It should appeal to younger players in particular. The music and sound effects accompanying the robots and the interaction with the town’s environment reflect the cartoon atmosphere well. UglyDolls  lacks Polish dubbing, which in my opinion should be mandatory in a game for children.

Summary

UglyDolls: An Imperfect Adventure  is a short, easy and fun game aimed at the youngest, which they will have fun with both on their own and with their parents. Older people can also reach for it, looking for a break from productions that pose great challenges. For those who collect trophies on PS4, it shouldn’t take long to get them all, and if their lives are short of platinum trophies, Uglyville is also open to them.

We would like to thank CDP for making the copy of the game on PS4 available for review.
