Play with us! – the editors suggest how to celebrate Board Games Day

On October 10 we celebrate, among others World Tree Day or the European Day against the Death Penalty. In the calendar of unusual holidays, we can also find a mention that it includes Oatmeal Day. We are often very skeptical about this type of event, but we are very enthusiastic about the Day of Board Games. The editors of the Last Tavern share with you their ideas for spending this special holiday.

Lord of the Rings

One of the first board games I purchased was Lord of the Ringscreated by Reiner Knizia and published in Poland by Bard. From the description, the title was exactly what I was looking for. It refers to the work of Tolkien, which I am a fan of, the game is played in a cooperative mode, and in addition, we will find an adventure straight from an RPG in it. Indeed, the beautiful graphics, both on the cards and on the board, reflect the atmosphere of Middle-earth. We can play the role of one of the hobbits, and on the way meet good heroes, such as Gandalf or Legolas, and the bad ones, headed by Saruman. We are also chased all the time by Sauron, against whom we have to protect the Ring-bearer (in this case it does not necessarily have to be Frodo). The game is really demanding and only cooperation with the rest of the group can give us the final victory. And maybe it is just impossible to play the characters to the end, but I have never regretted my choice anywayThe Lord of the Rings is one of those board games that I and my friends choose the most. – Piotr Markiewicz

Twilight Empire

What to celebrate the Day of Board Games if not an “ultimate game”, ie Twilight Imperium. Unfortunately, the dream will not be fulfilled. Playing with less than 6 players seems incomplete, and in the current situation, socializing, at least in my group, has been severely limited.

However, if we managed to collect Twilight Imperium (both in the third and fourth editions), it offers everything I expect from a board game. We have economics and resource management, technological development and territorial expansion; we build a fleet, vote in the galactic senate, trade goods and favors.

Added to this is the optimization of movements, playing over the table and waiting for the right moment to coordinate the attack. The main difficulty in this game is learning to let go. If the complete destruction of the opponent or the development of a given technology does not bring us benefits in points, it is usually not worth wasting resources on it.

The recently announced addition to the fourth edition of the game will allow you to play 8 people, which was already possible in the third edition and I managed to play it even once. The emotions were amazing only for the first 8 hours. Later the game just dragged on.

Still, I would repeat it. – Jarek Wójcicki

For sale

It was extremely difficult for me to choose this one favorite game, because many of the titles I know deserve this term. In connection with the Board Game Day, however, I would like to put an inconspicuous candidate on the pedestal, namely For Sale , which is a simple bidding game. It is this affordability and short gameplay time closed in a small box that make it a brilliant title. Whenever I go somewhere for a longer time, I take For sale with me , because I know that it will work in any company and will always provide a lot of emotions. – Hubert Heller

I know better

For one of the best games I’ve ever had in my home, it will definitely be I know better than Rebel. A sturdy box, with contents that literally explode the skull.

You can play for two or create teams of at least K-2 size. The title gives a lot of possibilities and the fun is really great. Not only can you test your knowledge and learn something new, but also a lot of laughter, especially when you feel that you know something, but that it has escaped somewhere. I recommend it with all my heart, because I haven’t dreaded any game for a long time. – Katarzyna Gnacikowska

Marvel: Champions

Daniem głównym tego wieczora będzie Marvel Champions, an LCG game from Fantasy Flight Games heavily modeled on their previous titles. In my opinion, it is by far the best game without any weight categories. Its only drawback, just like its predecessors, is that it only fully blooms with accessories, and the stand itself is relatively poor in content. This is a title that allows you to feel the atmosphere of the great M universe like no other. At this point, I would also like to express my appreciation for the extremely dynamic fan scene – so far dozens, if not hundreds of characters, villains and other diverse content for the game have been prepared for printing . Full respect! – Bartek Jaworski

Terraformacja Marsa

The festival of board games should be celebrated with something pleasant, addictive and thought-provoking, but without complicated rules and extensive instructions. Thinking about such a combination, I have several titles before my eyes, among them is the well-known in the board game world of Mars Terraformation.

Those who do not know this title should catch up quickly. An incredibly successful combination of several mechanics and an interesting, although often used topic, are the strengths of this game. Adjusting the factors (temperature, oxygen levels, and oceans) necessary for human survival on Mars is a drag from the first round, and it gets better with each subsequent round. The gameplay is so good that when I see the end approaching, I try to delay it a bit to enjoy the game longer. The many paths to win and the various skills of the corporations we control allow us to discover new strategies. Thanks to this, you will have many hours of pleasure at the table, and later also the expansion of the Mars Terraformationfor extras. There is probably no better way to spend this day than with such a delicious game. –   Katarzyna Satława
