A larger Star Trek Universe report noted that Paramount+ wants to release a new Star Trek movie every two years! The THR report explains Paramount’s reasons for opting for a Section 31 movie over the series:
Sources say Section 31 is envisioned as Mission: Impossible reuniting with the Guardians of the Galaxy , which with the large scope of both films would make it more of a challenge to make a weekly series. The plan, sources say, is for Kurtzman and company to shoot a Star Trek movie every two years for Paramount+.
Star Wars and Star Trek are oddly in sync right now in terms of franchise profitability. Both titles are currently seeing strong returns on the TV front – especially now that The Mandalorian Season 3 and Star Trek: Picard Season 3 are enjoying massive viewership heading into their finals. Meanwhile, neither Star Wars nor Star Trek have been able to release new blockbuster movies, making the streaming market even more attractive as a destination for niche franchise universes.
It seems that while Star Trek TV Universe may not have the appeal of blockbuster size, it does have enough to guarantee a successful streaming experience. It’s a nice trade-off between the more budget-friendly crossover events fans have received in DC’s Arrowverse series , and the obvious cost of making an actual theatrical feature film.
