Only the future will give us answers – the review of the book “The past world”

Tom Sweterlitsch’s Bypass World turned out to be one of the most interesting books I read in 2019.

A murder case

Special Agent Shannon Moss is assigned the murder of the family and the search for a missing child of a Navy SEAL member . It soon turns out that the man was an astronaut whose ship was lost in the abyss of the Deep Time. The crime seems to have to do with the future of the SEAL soldier . Moss travels back in time to investigate all possible versions of past events and to find information helpful in solving a contemporary case. It turns out that much more depends on the detection of the perpetrators of the crime than it seemed. During her travels, Agent Moss witnesses what her agency calls the Terminus. It is a harbinger of the impending apocalypse.

Mix of genres

The combination of a crime fiction and science fiction (the theme of the extermination of humanity and time travel) has a huge potential to create an extensive and interesting story. Tom Sweterlitsch did it. The tension is kept from start to finish, there is no place for boredom here. The investigation led by Shannon Moss grows increasingly complex as new information becomes available. The agent is determined to find out the truth and save the kidnapped child. At a later stage of the novel, the theme of the end of the world is important, the investigation becomes a struggle over time to save not only one person. The author presented each version of the future realistically, and the further we travel with the heroine, the world looks more and more futuristic. The technology that allows people to travel in time was also described in detail. The fates of the characters encountered in subsequent versions of the future differ radically, which adds variety to the book. The writer rose to the challenge of making sense of everything. Time travel is an integral part of the story. The character of Shannon is a big advantage of the book. The agent has a rich past and many dilemmas. Easily associates facts and is able to remember different versions of events during his travels. In order to bring the matter to an end, she acts in a deliberate manner, which often saves her life. The rest of the characters are not presented in the same detailed way, but it did not change my reading experience. The only drawback is the ending: too simple and not very satisfying. However, it does not significantly affect the final rating of the novel. which adds variety to the book. The writer rose to the challenge of making sense of everything. Summary

The Bygone World turned out to be one of the most interesting books published this year. The plot is complex, not easy to decipher. The time travel theme has a much better scientific explanation than most space opera books . The bygone world remains remembered for a long time, and after reading it one may wonder whether such a future of mankind can one day actually become a reality.

Nasza ocena: 8/10

The Bygone World mixes different genres and concepts very well, creating an engaging story that provokes reflection.
