How irritated I was with Rebel’s Colt Express addition is beyond all bounds. At a time when there are so many modern solutions on the market when it comes to building the game world – in Courier and Armored Train we are inundated with another dose (the first one we received in the base game) of very poor quality game elements and given the challenge of putting them together.
What makes the add-on stand out?
Well, here we have a team variant. We act in a common cause, not on our own account. We move on two trains moving away from each other and eagerly plan to get as much loot as possible. In addition to the treasures known from the base game, there are, among others, waiting for us here. gold nuggets, money packs and briefcases with secret documents. We also have a new reward – the Wild Bunch Token. Everything is fine, but so what? The components of the board game are still unreliable, the train kept falling apart during “attacks” and it took the lion’s share of the satisfaction from the game.
In addition, we play rounds as in the base game, but we must take into account new details when it comes to phases or special turns. The manual explains everything quite clearly.
The time we spend going from one phase to the next until the finale is approximately 50 minutes. From 3 to even 8 players can participate in this form of entertainment, which is worth remembering when purchasing Couriers , because in Colt Express itself two people are enough to play.
Do we have any advantages here?
The reviewer’s duty forces me to find such ones. So, apart from the terrible quality of the title, which requires an even worse base version in this respect, I will try to focus on the strengths of the position. The illustrations undoubtedly belong to them (as in the original, they also do not disappoint here: the new character cards are nice, the robbers have been repainted with character; they have this thief’s flair). Each of them also has special abilities, on which the game system is largely based,
It is also worth mentioning that the fun can be really surprising and when you turn a blind eye to the above-mentioned imperfections, you can find pleasure in it.
To sum up, an interesting idea, a fairly well-rendered atmosphere that could accompany the robbery of an armored train, but the execution calls for vengeance to the heavens. The title may appeal to fans of games in a very, very retro style. By the word “retro” here I mean poor workmanship of parts for the train, looking at them hurts my eyes.
