On interspecies friendship – a review of the graphic novel “Kodi”

Jared Cullum, the author of the reviewed Kodi graphic novel , was born in Tennessee. His comic book proposal was warmly received by critics, translated into many languages and won a Reuben Award.

Loneliness and friendship

Remaining under the care of her grandmother, Katia spends the summer at home in Alaska. She is lonely, but in her life she lacks not only friends, but also a goal that she would like/could pursue. Katia spends her free time reading comics, and the world she meets intrigues her. The girl’s life changes when she comes face to face with an animal of extraordinary size – a bear. Not dangerous, but one with a sensitive heart and a natural talent for fishing (which will turn out to be extremely important in this story …). This meeting changes the lives of the characters forever – so far lonely, since then best friends – Katia and Kodi. Unfortunately, due to another plot twist, the girl has to leave her friend and quickly return to her “permanent” home in Seattle. At first, the bear believes in the imminent return of her friend, but when time passes, decides to go on a quest! Kodi doesn’t care about the dangers, he just wants to find Katia.

Graphic novel

When it comes to Kodi content , you don’t need to set aside a lot of time to read. There are few speech bubbles, as well as text, but this is one of the advantages of Cullum’s proposal! Another one is unusual graphics – colorful, slightly blurred, with details. The graphic novel is actually an album at the same time, so it’s really good to watch. On the cover, captivating with shiny elements, the characters are a bit more distinct than in the middle of the book, but no reader will be disappointed. The story told will touch not only the youngest, but also their parents. And it’s all thanks to the concept refined by the author of the script and illustrations, the final effect of which remains in the memory for a long time.

An unusual bond

Both the main and secondary characters deserve attention. Each of them plays a role and influences the course of the story. Cullum focuses primarily on the title character, but an attentive reader will probably notice other important details of the presented world. Kodi is an offer for small and large, for comic book lovers and those who believe in friendship between people and animals. The author also raised the problem of taming an animal and the consequences associated with it, which can be a contribution to a conversation between adults and children about human-animal and animal-human relationships. The advantage of the comic is also the fact that an older preschooler should be able to read it on their own, and certainly watch it.
