Old Friends and New Reality – “Tom and Jerry” Blu-ray Release Review

Classic fights, but also a strange combination of animation with the real world, makes Tim Story’s newest production enchanting some and deterring others. However, I myself am of the opinion that this film deserves a moment of attention, especially if in your childhood you loved these two warring furries.

A new story, but very twisted

For years, fans have been asking for a new movie with Tom and Jerry. After all, Warner Bros. listened to our requests and we got something beyond the imagination of the fans. Two animated heroes in a completely new edition. Well, the idea of combining classic animation with an actor’s film is always worth it, but you have to be able to do it. As you can see, the creators stopped at the 1996 Cosmic match and came up with a specific collage in which all animals are animated and people are full-blooded Homo sapiens. Very young children may enjoy the bright, fast magic of whatever appears on the screen, but those with real feelings for a pair of brutally opposing animals will not be impressed.

Technical issues are one thing, but the scenario itself is another. It seems lazily modernized to revolve around two animals rather than designed directly for them – this is basically a children’s movie about the antics at a New York hotel that pauses every now and then to show the purification of the atmosphere between a pair of furries. Nevertheless, I wonder why – if this is a separate work and not a continuation of cartoons – some animals can talk, the other not? The second point concerns aggression. Violence does not seem to harm animals, so would humans also be immune? These are questions that we might not have to ask if the film itself was more engaging, and so during the screening, the same questions come to our minds.

Acting part

Chloë Grace Moretz, who plays the cheater turned hotel employee and peacemaker of cats and mice, is at least a good fit for the film’s action. Her prematurely developed acting fame seems to have stalled in recent years, nevertheless, her over-comedy works well here – Moretz is lively in her scenes and forms a good fit with Delaney and Michael Peña. Nevertheless, in the movie about Tom and Jerry, we did not expect it, because we are waiting for the performances of all these furies that have been stirring up generations for years.

Instead of a tomato, let’s throw a nice digital puck

I am really positively surprised by the quality of the Blu-ray release. Let me start with the fact that, in addition to Polish and English, we will also get the opportunity to watch the film in Spanish, French, Czech, Dutch, etc. This means that those who like to learn foreign languages can easily buy such an edition and will surely find something for myself. Of course, the situation is similar with the subtitles. Not only that, we will find such niche languages as Catalan or Euskara – the Basque language! A huge advantage of such a release!

The second important issue is the special accessories, which are quite numerous – seven different materials. In addition to gags and unused scenes (which are presented as storyboards, but also recorded sequences that were cut from the film), we find an interesting addition about looking from the perspective of Tom and Jerry, i.e. little kids. Another material worth watching is the one about how animated characters hit the streets of New York and how they used various types of equipment to play gags from classic cartoons. Each addition takes an average of 15 minutes.

Check out the experiment

Well, while the film lacks the classic comedy and the whole picture feels like an unfaithful reboot of a timelessly hilarious cartoon, as is the animation style it contains, it’s worth looking at it from a different angle. After all, we no longer have the 20th century, and everything is evolving, including the cinematography and the heroes themselves from the Hanna-Barbera stable.

The film uses 3D animation for animal characters, as opposed to the traditional 2D style used in the old cartoon, which gives the feeling that the authors of this production wanted to get some depth that can be seen in places, however, if the film would stick to the traditional style of animation and portray these classic characters like this as people are used to seeing them, they could be more effective in attracting viewers to the story. However, the movie is not a total failure for all those conservatives who remember the first short films from the 1940s. Scenes like Jerry exiting the hotel through his own revolving door the size of a mouse or Tom opening his chest to show his DNA is the good old animation spirit we managed to achieve get used to over the years.
