Not so long ago in Głuchołazy, i.e. a review of Jakub Ćwiek’s “Magic ladies”

I have a great fondness for both the work and the person of Jakub Ćwiek. Not only through the prism of the Liar and one of his favorite literary characters, Loki, but also through the personality of the writer. To this day I remember how, when caught by accident at Pyrkon, he had no problems signing the book. It is also no wonder that I undertook a review of his latest novel, the Magic ladies. Welcome.

“There are always at least three. It can be more, but never less. ” – cover quote

Magic ladies is a quite a peculiar reading. Not because of the author’s workshop, but because of the plot and setting. I always knew Cuba liked to embed his books in alternate timelines. Not too different from ours, but still different. This is also the case here, but nevertheless this alternative of the action time seems very insignificant, fleeting. I admit that this is a perfect game, especially since the author chose a very intriguing place of action, namely – his hometown Głuchołazy. It is there that, according to the author, live the three ladies of the witches who have guarded this small town in the Opole region for many years. In this book, Głuchołazy are a magical place, hidden from strangers and escaping the memory of everyone who leaves them. The merit is an extremely powerful spell, which was imposed after the famous witch hunts. Twenty-two people died then, and it was their victim who spread a protective shroud over the city, so that other witches and knowledgeable people could live in peace and safety. However, today, in the 21st century, black clouds hung over the town. This is the Order of St. Huberta decided to deal with the old mistake once and for all, a place where, instead of burning the witches, they were simply hanged. In addition, the investment of a wealthy woman in tourism is making the spell fade away. In the presence of so many threats and the advent of a new one, will the Magic ladies withstand, or will they give in, and then Głuchołaz’s future will not be so magical? You will find out by reading this book. so that the next witches and knowers could live in peace and safety. However, today, in the 21st century, black clouds hung over the town. Brad is a workshop and knowledge

Since I first encountered the prose of Jakub, I knew that I had come across an extraordinary author, endowed not only with a great pen, but also with extensive knowledge and skills to use it properly. An example of this can be the aforementioned series of Liar , where Brad has placed and combined various belief systems. In Magic ladies, the writer not only used the knowledge of his hometown, but also intertwined it with the fact that in some mythology, witches appear in threes. We have three Norns from Norse mythology, three Mores (Parks) from Greco-Roman myths. There were three Gorgon sisters with the most famous Medusa and three Graces, as well as three Graje. The motif of the three witches is not only mythology, but also a film, where one can mention itDario Argento’s trilogy of the Three Mothers . Brad skillfully distinguished the motif itself and processed it properly to match his vision. And so, instead of Argentinian Mothers of Tears, Darkness and Sighs, we have three: a mischievous maid, a ruddy mother and a dangerous old woman. This treatment surprised even too much. It even covered a phenomenally tailored plot and very expressive and vivid characters. The threads of magic and the unknown have been woven very skillfully. They’re not too intrusive, but when they do show up, they do things. Ćwiek proves that he is still in writing. He wrote an amazing and really addictive book. I recommend it with all my heart.

The SQN publishing house also deserves separate words of appreciation. It is clearly visible that their cooperation with Ćwiek is going well, as I have not noticed any decline in form in the text. I have the impression that the longer Jakub is on the market, the more his books captivate new and old readers.
