On the outskirts of Los Angeles, in the dry and unfriendly Santa Clarita Valley in Southern California, where siblings OJ (Daniel Kaluuya) and Emerald (Keke Palmer) inherited a horse stud from their father, a legend of the training industry, unusual phenomena begin to take place. Trainers struggling with the hardships of running a dying business, interested in an unexplained discovery, try to capture it with cameras. They are assisted by a former child star (Steven Yeun) who works as an announcer at the family’s amusement park adjacent to the siblings’ ranch. Soon their actions have terrible consequences.

After the undoubted success of Run away! and That’s us , Jordan Peele was looking for a new challenge that would expand his film portfolio. Thinking about the production of a genre that he has not yet filmed, the director came up with the idea of making a classic, somewhat archaic film about UFOs, and passing it through the sieve of his own creativity.
It’s a difficult genre because it requires special attention to this unique and great canvas that is heaven, admits film director Jordan Peele. – “Close Encounters of the Third Kind” had a great influence on me. It is a film with great vision and momentum, but most of all Steven Spielberg’s incredible ability to make us feel authentically when watching something out of this world. It was this immersive experience that I wanted to provide to the viewers of my film. But for this genre, in which we often attribute various amazing events and abilities to some alien, more advanced civilization, I wanted to ask a much simpler question. What if the answer is much less complicated and much darker than we could imagine?

As with all Peele’s films, nothing seems to be the way it was at the beginning, as far as watched. In No! , more than one surprise awaits us.
We consciously try not to reveal too much about the plot of the film in all trailers and promotional materials, explains the producer of the film, Ian Cooper. – We are aware that in this case the screening with as little information as possible brings the most joy. Jordan Peele creates films that taste best when we don’t quite know what to expect.

Like all previous films by the American director, this one also began with a great love for genre cinema. Peele uses all the cinematic clichés in his own way:
I love genres because they make us have specific expectations of the film. The movie genre is a kind of guide that tells you how to tell a story to get a specific emotional result. This gives us the opportunity to have fun with it. Just when the viewer expects to be scared, he becomes laughable instead, and when he expects to be laughed, we bring him to tears. All this makes our film beyond any categorization.
The real topic of history is the film industry and the criticism of its functioning.
I tried to create something that would be a critical but also a loving look at what we were doing, explains the director. – I wanted to take a closer look at these talented people who are always beyond the media attention and the spotlight. Animal trainers, set designers, technical experts who are responsible for these wonderful paintings that we can admire, but which in themselves we cannot admire, because they are hidden forever in the shadow of someone else.
As in Peele’s previous films, another, much deeper subject unfolds below the surface. The film, which is a spectacle in itself, deepens the reflection on how the spectacle shapes our culture and our image of ourselves. When the heroes spot an unexplained phenomenon at the ranch, they all feel the urge to document the anomaly.
The heart of the film is the question about human addiction to the show – comments Peele. “And when there is money in the game, the atmosphere starts to thicken.
Not! from the formal point of view, it is a carefully thought-out composition that uses and efficiently juggles well-known motifs of genre cinema, which can evoke real and surprising emotions. Just as Steven Spielberg’s Jaws caused widespread anxiety about water, yes No! it will successfully make us stop looking to heaven the same way.
The newest film by Jordan Peele, No! had its theatrical premiere on August 12. Blu ‑ ray ™ and DVD releases will be released on November 10th.
