“Nostalgia full mouth” – review of the zine “90s FOREVER”

Jan Kabaciński’s debut comic book zine will appeal mainly to fans of the 90s.

We have a hot holiday in the middle of the 90s, and the backyards of the whole country are dominated by bubble gum, automatic killing and comic book notebooks. The heat pouring down from the sky melts the asphalt like water ice on a stick. Suddenly, a monster of its time, bred on cosmic steroids and covered with ammunition the size of a human head, emerges from a fog of nostalgia thick as cotton candy. 90s FOREVER is a zine full of taciturn tough guys, big guns, government intrigues and bloody scores. Here it is undoubtedly ruled by those who have bigger bones and even bigger cojones. Here is a comic book that is such a powerful dose of testosterone that the veins filled with blood pumped to the rhythm of eurodance immediately stand out on the reader’s biceps.

Ooooobiad !!!

The author of the zine is a blogger from Poznań (Fat Geek – Reviews of Figures), a fan of widely understood pop culture of the 80s and 90s and a declared fan of Rob Liefeld. In 90s FOREVER you can find almost everything that was related to this magical and grotesque decade. Those times allowed you to buy hard chewing gum, and when the sun was blazing mercilessly from the sky, you would spend time in the lounge with slot machines or at home watching the next episode of Dragon Ball . Kabaciński makes no secret of his intentions – his goal is to evoke nostalgia for times gone by. In the zine we find reticent, muscular tough guys from the Death Lords brigadeconsisting of resurrected and genetically modified soldiers. We will also see what happens when we switch the game to EXTREME mode while playing Mortal Kombat on the slot machine and what a shortened version of Jurassic Park could look like . For someone who had a childhood in the 90s, it caused an avalanche of pleasant memories. The drawings are black and white, at times very grotesque and abstract, which perfectly reflects the atmosphere of pop culture in the last decade of the 20th century, which was ruled by the one who had more guns and muscles.
