Souldead is a newly announced game from the Warsaw studio Heathen Software, which instead of combining different game genres, tries to be one and do it well.
Souldead is a fast-paced FPS action game in which the main emphasis is on speed, dynamism and some unusual mechanics. The uniqueness of the game is also influenced by the great graphics. In addition to such classics as Doom and Quake , Souldead is the spiritual heir to such titles as Hexen 2, Heretic, Blood, Serious Sam and Painkiller .
In Souldead , the player gets access to a large arsenal of weapons, which is definitely different than in classic FPS games. Speaking of a fresh take on shooters, it’s worth mentioning that the levels in the game are quite varied. Thanks to dark magic, our protagonist can use skills such as double jump or dash. In addition, his arsenal will include a magic shotgun, the ammunition of which is made from sucked mana.
The game starts in a dark fantasy world that is devoured by demons. Our journey will pass through various regions, incl. Fantasy world or Victorian England, to rest in peace at the end of this road. Our protagonist is the nameless undead necromancer who was tortured, burned and buried 200 years ago. Due to the fact that the cultists are trying to resurrect their master – Sil’thur – our necromancer hero rises from the grave seeking revenge.
During the gameplay, our hero will encounter Sil’thur, who will start to consume the soul of a necromancer. Our protagonist will fight his way to the final conflict, taking place in the first location. There he will face Sil’thur and defeat him. After the defeat, the demon will open a magic portal through which it will escape. The necromancer will also chase him by passing through the portal.
What makes Souldead different ?
- The game redefines the FPS genre – now every game focuses on dialogue and cutscenes, and the player is left to fend for himself without a good product to play ad-hoc, save and return to the game whenever he wants. Some players are looking for pure action, and these are the people the developers want to hit.
- The creators want to avoid tedious loading of the system in the game, so that the player can focus on the action.
- Unique enemies – for example, one of the demons has a unique ability. When the player looks at him, the demon will turn to stone and be invincible. To kill such a demon you cannot look at him. Chance is to attack with explosives or shoot him when he turns to stone (~ 0.5 seconds).
- Each location will have its own set of standard and special weapons and its own enemies.
- The telekinesis system will allow the player to pick up and then throw scenery elements. This mechanic will allow the player to use various strategies (it will be possible to throw a barrel at a demon resistant to magic).
- The player will be able to press buttons and pull levers – this will allow you to create logical puzzles.
- Souldead is designed to be played horizontally and vertically – the player can grab walls and jump away to distant places, or teleport to another zone and dash while in the air.
The game is created using the Unreal Engine. It will be available for PC, a few months after the premiere, which will take place in the last quarter of 2022, the developers intend to release the game for new and old generation consoles. A free demo should be available soon.
