Fans certainly didn’t know what to expect from the first full trailer that came out in April. As it turned out, it definitely lived up to expectations. Directed by Greta Gerwig , Barbie drew inspiration from old Hollywood musicals to create the visual aesthetic of Barbietown. She previously explained this decision in an interview with Vogue.
This is such a high level of what we call genuine artificiality. Painted sky – which is an illusion, but it’s really there. The palpability of artificiality is something we keep coming back to.
Gerwig said.
The interview also added how Barbie cinematographer Rodrigo Prieto created a special color palette that Gerwig called “Techni-Barbie”, further indicating the film’s surreal Technicolor influence.
In addition to Robbie and Gosling, the film stars Will Farrell, Issa Rae, Hari Nef, Emma Mackey, Dua Lipa, Sharon Rooney, Ana Cruz Kayne, Alexandra Shipp, John Cena and Kate McKinnon.
Barbie hits theaters on July 21!
