Netflix today unveiled the first trailer for the upcoming third season of The Witcher and revealed that the next season will be split into two parts. Part 1, which consists of five episodes, will air on June 29, while Part 2, which contains three episodes, will debut on July 27.

What will the third season of The Witcher be about ?

The season three trailer shows Geralt facing an unknown threat while the Wild Hunt hunts down Ciri. The trailer also briefly reveals Rience, the fire wizard and likely main antagonist of season three, who has been re-cast and will now be played by Sam Woolf. The teaser ends with Geralt, Ciri and Yennifer facing an unknown enemy in a garden, presumably in the fortress of the sorcerer Aretuza.

Official description from Netflix:

While the rulers, wizards and monsters of the Continent try to capture Ciri, Geralt takes her away from Cintra to protect his reunited family from those who threaten it. Yennefer, entrusted with Ciri’s training, leads them to the protected fortress of Aretuza, where she hopes to learn more about the extraordinary powers dormant in the girl. However, it turns out that they find themselves in the middle of a conflict full of corrupt politics, black magic and villainy. They must fight and risk it all – or risk losing themselves forever.

Given that The Witcher seems to be roughly adapting one of the original books per season, it’s likely that Netflix will want to continue the series for at least two more seasons to wrap up Geralt’s story.

The third season was filmed, among others in England, Wales, Croatia, Slovenia, Italy and Morocco.
