Prey a prequel to the Predator series is set to debut on the Hulu platform later this year. 20th Century Studios CEO Steve Asbell has just released a few more details regarding the exact time and location of the movie.
Until now, information about the story of Prey has been kept secret. In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter Asbell said that:
In order to meet the volume that we are looking at — which is, by 2023, 10-plus movies just for streaming — it’s going to be a combination of originals in those genres. And coolest of all for fans, we get to find bold takes on beloved Fox properties. You can take big creative swings — which you’ll see with Prey, which we’ll launch this summer. A Predator movie set in the Great Plains in 1719 by Dan Trachtenberg.
The first Predator hit theaters in 1987, and told the story of a commando group that collided with an otherworldly threat in a distant jungle. In the sequel, the threat turned to the urban area, while in Predators we saw a group of survivors fighting against aliens in the jungle, though this time it was a planet specifically populated by victims for Predators to hunt them down. The series also made two crossovers with Alien , Alien vs. Predators in which humans have largely witnessed a collision between aliens.
The producer of the new production, John Davis, has previously said that the film will be different from its predecessors, but at the same time it will be compatible with the franchise.
It goes back to what made the original Predator movie work. It’s the ingenuity of a human being who won’t give up, who’s able to observe and interpret, basically being able to beat a stronger, more powerful, well-armed force. It actually has more akin to The Revenant than it does any film in the Predator canon. You’ll know what I mean once you see it.
Prey is expected to make its Hulu debut later this year.
