The new main character of the series “Batwoman” is Ryan Wilder. Before our eyes, a beautiful dark-skinned masked figure in a new costume appears. Pictures below.
Ever since Ruby Rose quit the role of Batwoman after the show’s successful first season, viewers wondered who would replace her. We already know that a new series will be created, but with a different heroine played by Javicia Leslie, not very well known so far. She will be the first black actress to play the role.
The clothes of the new bat woman were designed by Maya Mani, a recognized artist, known for “dressing up” countless films and series. For Javicia, she designed a perfectly fitting costume with more red (on the palm), and a wig with long curly hair was given a red and black color. According to the script, it is the main character who designs her own costume in the third episode. Vancouver-based Oceandrive Learher made the garment. Leslie highlights how proud she is to represent a dark-skinned and non-heteronormative community:
I like the fact that Ryan becomes her very own Batwoman – that’s her style, her prey and her moment! It was an honor to work with Caroline [Dries, Producer] and Maya. I felt it was important for viewers to be able to tell by the silhouette that Batwoman was a black girl. With a fitted suit and a beautiful afro, it definitely worked!
Maya Mani adds:
As Batwoman, Javicia Leslie brings not only a new perspective to this role, but also physical strength. For the new costume, it was important to define Javicia’s dominant presence while showing off her athleticism and allowing her the freedom to express Batwoman’s physical nature while also looking incredibly cool!
